DJs descend on convention centre New Year's Eve
Eight hours of dance music goes to 4 a.m.

NIAGARA FALLS — It'll be a loud gathering of techno and electronic music going until nearly dawn. Just don't call it a rave.
For two decades, the free televised concert down at Queen Victoria Park has been synonymous with New Year's Eve in Niagara Falls. But there's a new party in town this year, and it doesn't end at midnight. It'll just be warming up.
Golden New Year's Eve 2012 will be an eight-hour, indoor dance party at the Scotiabank Convention Centre Niagara featuring renowned DJs Avicii and Steve Aoki, along with Toronto's Manzone & Strong and Niagara's Christina Cruise. The music starts at 8 p.m. and goes until 4 a.m.
Unlike the typical rave, the event will have tight security, a dress code and admission starting at $75.
"It's a party," says Melisa Mancini, event promoter for The Fallsview Group, one of five partners putting on the show. "We're getting world-class DJs coming to the area, and it's so exciting because they really wouldn't have thought of this as a destination to come to."
Naturally, Niagara Falls-born Joel Zimmerman, a.k.a. Deadmau5, was the first choice for the event, but he was already booked for the Pier 36 entertainment complex in New York for New Year's Eve.
Grammy-nominated Avicii is no slouch for second choice. The Swedish producer ranked No. 6 in DJMag.com's annual Top 100 DJs list (Deadmau5 is No. 4), and is one of dance music's fastest rising stars. Scoring him for a first-time event is major, says Mancini.
"Avicii coming to Niagara Falls is such a huge deal."
He's so in demand, Avicii will wrap up his Niagara Falls set at 12:30 a.m., hop on a plane, and play into the wee hours at Pier 94 in New York.
The Niagara show is for people 19 or older, with a "mature style code" in effect (no sportswear, hats, running shoes or T-shirts). Unlike rave parties, which came under political pressure in the 1990s because of their abundance of club drugs, the convention centre event will be monitored by about 150 police and security officers.
"The necessary policies at the convention centre are in place," says convention centre board chairman Wayne Thomson.
"I don't know how anybody can say anything negative about it. The place has been leased, that's the business of the convention centre."
About 2,500 tickets have already been sold for the event, which has capacity for about 10,000 people.
If anything, the show seals Niagara Falls' reputation as Canada's place to be for New Year's Eve, says Thomson. Rather than detract from the concert at Queen Victoria Park, it will attract a whole different crowd.
"What you have in (the park) are families and couples," he says. "What you're going to find is a different crowd, maybe a younger crowd at the convention centre."
More importantly, he adds, hotel rooms will be filled.
"I look at this as a great opportunity for the entire community. A lot of people are going to be working and busy that night, which is absolutely essential." |

Such jokes. An abundance of well-paid police and security will be there to make sure there are no druggies, but it's aye-oh-kay-oh to get shamashed on alkehol! Have fun, as long as you dress the way we tell you to dress and are having the kind of fun we tell you to have!
Yeah, I know, it'll sell out, if I don't like it, I don't have to go, etc...the ridiculous illusion of the presentability of it all just makes me laugh. |

It's 'cool' to call a party a rave nowadays. Especially when it's applied to cheesey aviici, shm, etc commercial synth house that's the rage lately. Meh. |
