Problem with the smaller cars is that for 4-5k, most of them have done more miles around the block than Stu's whoring up the cor. If you're prepared to take a risk on something with a lot of km's on the clock, if it doesn't have log books, leave it.
Corollas, Swifts, Mirages, Lancers and so forth are about the safest bet. Stay away from Camry's and anything Korean for that price, they're always owned by people who actually hate driving and suck at it, hence they're never maintained and parked by braille all their lives.

IMO, go big!
There's a lot of baseline 6 cylinder Commodores and Falcons out there for 4-5k that people just can't get rid of. Its not because they're rubbish either, its just because they're fairly large but no more so than the modern mid-size cars and mostly sold as ex-lease so they're always looked after if not loved. Or trade ins on an SUV.
While they might have 100,000+km on them, they just keep going forever and parts cost barely anything. Petrol? As long as you don't punt it all the time they can be very economical.

Plus, the next dopey bint that reverses in front of you is probably going to DIE and the Falcon/Commodore is just going to need a new bumper :p

You know, i have had my 99 mazda protoge since 2003 and the only thing i have had to replace was the clutch master cylinder wire -- the thing is built like a tank (besides the obvious oil change/break pads/screen wipers)

i would highly recommend a Mazda - my mum has one, my dad had one -- they never seem to break. I get spiffy 30mpg in a 13 year old car so gas is good.
