I've been thinking about this for the last couple of days while taking the train (no not the subway..) to work.
When you listen to music (be it Trance or not) does your mood alter the music (ie. you're in a bad mood, everything sounds like crap) or does the music alter you (ie make you feel better, or comforted).:conf: :nervous: |

Hmmm...
Now that, is a good discussion question :p
I think that my mood alters the music...whenever I feel hyper then the music just pumps me up more. But if i'm like depressed...or just in deep thought, then most music doesn't give me any energy, and I just truly lose myself in it. |

Music has the capacity to change my mood...I know years ago when all my friends listened to ska (a very happy sounding and fast music vaguely related to punk) I found it hard to not be happy when I listened, even if my mood was foul at the time.
That said, I generally change what I'm listening to depending on the mood I'm in...Trance music is something I generally only go for when I'm decently happy.
If I'm in a depressed or apathetic frame of mind I'm much more likely to put in early goth like the Smiths or Joy Division or emo music ala the Weakerthans, Mineral or Sunny Day Real Estate.
If I'm angry I go with old school punk like Bad Religion or the Dead Kennedys or hard edged industrialish stuff like Atari Teenage Riot. |

What came first -- the chiken or the egg? :D
I think in this case the chicken comes before the egg for me, that is music comes after my mood. I think if i'm feeling energetic then my taste in music is represented by that. So i listen to trance and uptempo prog when i'm in those sorts of moods.
If i'm in a "cool" mood (cruisng in my car for example) i tend to play breakbeat alot because it seems to be quite trendy at the moment, since it's got elements of funk (hip hop/rap, etc) and Electronica to boot, making it the ultimate crossover genre. (and alot of it does sound pretty cool) |

| It almost always is the latter. Regardless of how I feel, a song has a good way of making me feel the same way it always does (i.e Digger-Church of RA, Cosmic Gate-The Truth, Hi-Gate-Gonna work it out, a bunch of others make me want to go nuts, Thrillseekers-Dreaming of you get me in the "mood" if you know what I mean) |

I find that Im somewhat opposite. My mood doesnt necessarily change my perception of the music. But my mood changes what I want to listen too at a particular moment. If I am in a happy mood, I prefer uplifting, hard trance, hard techno, something with a fast beat. When Im just kind of mellowing out, I prefer progressive, or a slow techno.
It was weird. Last year I broke up with a girl, and after the relationship we continued as "friends" wink wink.... Anyway, I soon found out that while her and I were being "Friends", she was also being "Friendly" with my best friend. I was depressed and angered by the whole situation, and had Linkin Park in my CD player for 3 months. The music helped me cope with my anger.
Recently, I have been in a good mood, and have been listening to a lot of hard trance, techno, progressive, some psy trance. When Im in a bad mood, I usually listen to trance and techno to get my mind off whatever is bothering me. Very Therapuetic. |

| I find that my music doesnt influence my mood so much as my choice of music is influnced by my mood. For examplke if I'm upset, I like to listen to something calm and relaxing chillout or progressive. If Im in a good mood I listen to more upbeat stuff, for me if the music doesnt mach the mood then the music sounds worse and my mood doesnt change. |

Only hearing an incredibly sick, awesome track for the first time can change my 'mood'. On the other hand, If I'm in deep thought I'll listen to deeper trance or melodic progressive to take myself on a journey...
Cheers:D |

Well,my mood no doubt alters my CHOICE in music. For instance, when I'm pissed,I usually put on some hard trance or really hard techno, since this stimulates the aggression I have inside, and keeps me from taking out my anger on something else.(I usually bounce around like a madman, punching the air with my fist to the beat, while pretending that I'm smashing something/someone I'm pissed at.:D)But that doesn't exactly mean that the music alters my mood, either.I guess it's a little bit of both.
And thanks for being one of the few starting a creative thread, Fir3start3r.That was desperately needed right now.;) |
