Mastering... ohhh, I said it! I said it!

Yes, the time has come. My mixdowns are on lockdown and now I need to start fiddling with mastering. I want my tracks, my WIPS and so forth, to have some punch and volume when presenting them to people, so they don't sound so weak. I know it won't be final mastering if I'm just putting it on the WIP but it's better than having people turn their system volume all the way up. Ultimately I'd like to start mastering my own tracks. For the ones that I finish, I do have someone pro who will do it for me and with hardware summing, so that's where my finished tracks will be going but I'd still like to have a crack at my own mastering. Any thoughts? |

Can't I just put a limiter on my WIP? |

choose the "solid low end" preset
play with the INPUT gain until you are around -8RMS < -10RMS (no need to turn any of the other knobs, as this setting is as good as it gets for EDM)
Dithering is done by the plugin itself
you can put an EQ before, but since your doing this on the same setup as you did your mixdown, i assume sonically you've already done your best effort. There is nothing more to it at this stage.
you could also choose to do it all, but then you need to think about :
EQ - Yes/no ?!?
Dyamics processing? - Why? not happy with the mixdown?
width and space - Really needed? what's wrong with the mixdown
"flavour" whatever that is, altering your track with colourboxes like tube emulators and stuff (normally do more harm than good)
Bottom line, don't get sucked in, focus on maintaining the integrity of your tracks and you'll be fine. |
