Full moon party in Thailand- ever been? (pg. 3)

My opinion is that if you can go to the party, you should.
I think it's cool to be able to dance on a beach all night.
Getting massages after dancing is nice too (which you can do in other places in Thailand too).
Because of the minimum stay requirement, you do need to make sure you have enough days in your schedule for it. I would recommend staying until at least 2 days after, so you can do the afterparty (climbing up the hill to get to the Backyard Club after dancing all night is fun, lol), and rest and recover.
While there, you could also try elephant riding and/or the Snoop Dogg Boat Tour around the island.
An alternative to staying in Koh Phangan is to stay in Koh Samui, Ko Tao, or Surat Thani, and take a ferry there just for the party. That will be a longer trip to and from the party, and I've heard lines for that get quite long. You're at the mercy of the ferry schedule, and if you miss one, you might have to wait a few hours for the next one.
For the flights to and from Koh Samui, book on the web site for Bangkok Airways or Thai Airways. It's cheaper than the fares listed on Kayak and other US-based travel sites. At least it was for me.
I saw and met many Europeans and Aussies in Thailand - maybe there are some TA's from there who have gone or are going. |

Also, One of my good friends from Malaysia tells me (if you can plan it this way) to avoid May-September all together. She was explaining to me that there is just too much rain, monsoons aside. Another friend from Jakarta comfirms these dates. Anywho, i was planning on going during the winter months, so it looks like I am going during the best time.
Nat: , girl, that would have been incredible! :) When are you headed over? We are planning for around this time next year (January or February). Was going to go this year during the summer, but after further investigation on the weather, we are postponing til next winter. This Winter (2012) was just too soon on the budget, unfortunately :( |

Thai massages are legendary. Hurts so good.
The standard one is done for less than $10 US for 1 hour, and there are tons of legit places for it. In Bangkok, the Wat Pho temple is a place where you could see people training and/or learning how to do it.
Some places offer oil massage (using some kind of massage oil, which I think is like baby oil) but I wouldn't recommend it on islands, as it attracts sand and bugs.
Soapy massage is a more seedy kind. I've read that some couples like doing it together. There are places for that in Bangkok and Phuket; I don't know if anywhere else has them.
That club is on (or at the top of) a hill, and has a paved road and steps leading to it, but they are fairly steep, especially when you're tired and from the Full Moon Party.
I think it opens at 8 am, at least for the FMP. I guess you could call it their version of DC-10.

Definitely avoid those those islands during the monsoon season(summer). The best time to actually go is this time of the year, up until about April. Really beautiful beaches, but Had Rin beach which is the main beach on that island has sea fleas that bite and sting a little bit. So I'd recommend asking about other beaches on other parts of the island.
You can get pretty good deals on lodging, I don't know what you might be looking to spend. The food is awesome, and it's pretty cheap as well. You might want to rent yourself a little motor bike to get around as well, or else there are plenty of taxis.
The Full Moon party itself is a lot of fun, eventhough the music is pretty crappy, lots of psy-trance & hip hop, but there's thousands of people partying on the beach until the sun comes up. Like Paryhopper mentioned, they do have a pretty cool after party at an outdoor club called The Backyard, up the hill from the beach on top of a cliff, looking down on the ocean where they play some prog-house/tribal. Lee Burridge used to play there back in the day, it's actually a really nice venue. I can't wait to go back to those islands, I always pass through there when I'm in Bangkok. Enjoy! |

I lived in Bangkok for about a year and half, but I decided to pass on the full moon parties.
There are so many different ways to party over there. There's the expat scene, the backpacker scene, the Thai scene, the model scene.. and they're all vastly different. Depending on what kind of experience you want there determines what are must do-s and what are must avoids.
As for Bangkok, the party scene is getting better there every day. I can fill anyone in who's interested :) |

I wore a Space Ibiza shirt when I went, so I thought maybe it was me. But I went in July 2009, whereas the video is from January 2010.
At the FMP, someone who saw my shirt told me that his brother spun at Space. Too bad I didn't catch the name though. |
