So each year since 2008, I've recorded my alternative to Armin Van Buuren's Year Mixes. Last year I thought might be the last as I wasn't sure how good trance was going to be in 2011. I could see the way Armin was leaning towards slower more progressive music and how Above & Beyond had totally changed (and ruined) their style. Would quality uplifting, banging trance be able to survive? Of course it would...
2011 surpassed all expectations when it comes to trance music. Whilst Above & Beyond have turned to Arty, Mat Zo and Andrew Bayer to essentially be their out put for Anjunabeats and Armin has continued to slow his style right down (even though he still claims uplifting trance is his passion), a massive new breed have shone through. Less fluffy vocal tracks and more concentration on brilliant melodies.
Picking 100 tracks is usually fairly straight forward, I can get about that amount in November time. This year I had 140 tracks I wanted to include in September, such is the quality of 2011 trance.
This mix I feel reflects the best this year has had to offer. Ranging from a couple of techno tracks to some progressive and psy then on to uplifting and banging trance and finishing off with some Goa, I can honestly say this is the first year mix where I love each and every one of the tracks I've picked. The 2nd part of this year mix is probably my favourite mix that I've ever done and that includes my all time favourites mixes from earlier this year.

Good choices. Definitely agree on the Armin/Anjuna, etc. I don't count that as trance. The pleasant surprise for me was the reemergence of Perfecto Fluoro, which had some absolutely stunning releases. You have a few of them on your mix :toocool: and a couple of them are, for me, contenders for track of the year (in particular, two of the Man with No Name remixes).
This was also a very good year for psytrance: pretty much everything Ovnimoon touched turned to gold. |

cheers guys :) Yeah Perfecto Fluoro coming back has been excellent although would quite like to see them edge a bit more towards what they used to come out with in the mid-late 90s next year.
Ovnimoon has been outstanding in 2011 and hope that continues in 2012.
Label of the Year has to be Patterson's Night Vision though. Some brilliant releases on there this year! |
