My hip hop artist / rapper friend asked me what's a good mic for a cheep studio to record on and I told him a Shure sh-57 with a pop filter did i do him wrong?
So whats a good mic for a hip hop artist / rapper in the studio for the most bang for your buck for less then $150?
I like the Shure sh-57 because it's the swiss army knife of mics and you can record any thing on and get a good sound out of it. I made whole songs in the studio with just that one mic.
btw for some reason I don't like the Shure sh-58, it don't look as cool as the sh-57! :)

what do y'all think?
also I had a few, Happy New Year! :)

and ya, for rap artists, well you really should avoid rap artists for a number of reasons but a 57 is really all you want to use. Would you let a kid play with your u87 ? If the guy doesn't scream hot fire, maybe the 58 which is a little brighter. you don't need a better mic for rap.

But ya , avoid rap artists. And edm artists. Your studio will be robbed eventually.

The SM58 is the standard for hiphop vox recordings, not the 57. The two are nearly identical, but the 58 has a built-in windscreen for close vocal mic'ing. The 57 isintended more for mic'ing instruments, guitar amps, etc. and doesn't withstand the abuse that the 58's metal mesh ball offers. The plastic caps on the 57 break pretty easily, get slobbered up during close vocal mic'ing' etc. Also, you can easily unscrew and remove the ball and windscreen from the 58 to give it a good cleaning after DJ Jazzy Dip drools herpes-infested skankjuice all over your mic.

And, yes, for mic'ing rappers you want a good dynamic mic like the 58/57 because they handle plosives and dynamic ranges of close-mic'ed vox better than condensers or (esp) ribbon mics do. Also, many rappers prefer to hold the mic close to their mouth and "work it" into the performance - condensers are far too sensitive to handheld noise for that and will pick up all sorts of rumbling, etc.

I have friends who like the Blue Encore mics for rap and they're in your price range.

lol ribbon mic i stole from MF set! phantom power on ! , now lets ing raise the roof. Hmmm the mic isn't working.

Funny story about mics and performers. So this singer, they gave her a mic ( 30 $ ) that wasn't on. Meanwhile the real mic is placed away. But like this girl is like moving the mic into her mouth and . You know how people are doing all sorts of weird things. After the session. He throws it out. Goes to the storage room, there is 40 of them just there. For stupid singers so they can hold the mic and he doesn't have to worry about his vintage stuff being wrecked.

just picked up a beta57a, as kind of an all purpose mic

seems well suited for live vox

as far as recording vocals in the studio, it was not easy getting practical behavior out of it. I had to wrap 2 additional layers of nylon over my pop filter (which involved going into the women's underwear section at Target and buying pantyhose) and using a de-esser.

I do have it behaving like a condenser mic now... Kinda tough though haven't had much experience with vocals in the studio

I want to save up and get a Rode NTK I hear that is great mic. Beta57 just for now and within my budget
