Ignoring Tiesto's style change for a minute, the rock star analogy for superstar DJs is spot-on. Honestly, we all know how the club scene is, DJs are probably the hardest partying "musicians" out there right now. The kind of stuff the real rock stars used to do back in the 60s/70s/80s is what DJs do now.
Rock bands have gotten "softer" because so much of a light is on them that any time they do anything racy, it's all over the media. DJs in dark clubs can get away with a LOT more, so they've honestly become the new rock stars as far as cultural persona goes.
And since it's a Tiesto thread and his new style is bound to come up... look at the different rock/hip-hop acts throughout history. Style changes always happen, and eventually the artists tend to go back to their roots.
We can all sit around and say Tiesto "sold out", but there is NO WAY the man who put together all of those Forbidden Paradise, Magik, and ISoS compilations has lost his love of trance music. He probably just wanted to move away from it for a while. I'm almost certain he'll go back to it eventually.
