So, first the good stuff. Stanton Warriors were awesome. Sound quality was pretty good and the set was great. Really took it to another level in the last 45 mins to an hour. I've yet to hear a bad set from them live and the friends that came with were thoroughly impressed after their first time at a breaks event. Also a killer opening set from JELO which I was glad to be able to catch about 40 minutes of.
But, the night had a lot of stuff that weighed against it being a memorable one. Firstly, is $8 for a beer really the new standard price? Really? That has to be at least a 300% mark-up. And I wasn't the only one commenting on it. Then, to add insult to injury, running out of beer sometime around 1am pretty much sealed the deal.
The real pain in the ass was the coat check line. First, as I gathered from the website and after arriving, AME functions more as a high end sushi restaurant by day so it's by no means designed for a crowd the size of this one. Having the coat check in the same narrow hall as the ATM and the entrance/exit and the smoking area exit made for a horrible lineup. Not to mention that I waited almost twice as long in the coat check line as I did to get into the venue, which is saying something. I finally gave up when I was the next person to check my coat after seeing the guy spend over 5 minutes trying to track down someone elses jacket. I decided against it and ended up holding onto my coat like half of the other people there did for the whole night.
So, great show by the headliners and openers that I saw. Good crowd and good vibe. But I won't be going to any more events at that venue that's for sure. |
