Yeah, because 80 people being killed in a year in Toronto is at all comparable to the over 16,000 that were killed in the past year in Mexico. And while it is most concentrated along the US border, there are still links to the rest of the country (e.g. cartel leaders living in Mexico City). Areas to the south have started to become more directly affected as of late too. |

if we had Mexico's population, then 2300 deaths would be expected in Canada, using very rough way to compare data.
So Mexico, with its war on drugs, poverty and burgeoning cocaine trade is has 8 times more homicides than Canada. Still not as devastatingly dangerous the whole country over as many uninformed on the outside make it out to be, depending on how one looks at it.
In comparison the US had 16000 homicides in 2009, about the average the past five years and they are three times the population of Mexico, so Mexico has three times more the amount of homocides than the US, again going by the rough comparison.
Eight times more than Canada and three times more than US.
Crime is like anywhere else, it depends on where you go and who you know, mostly. If you are in a resort area, away from the cartel driven areas, the chances are very minimal (again, over 1.6M Canadians visited Mexico last year). Much like the US, there are cettain areas that are safe and other areas not so much. And if you happen to be with ppl who have connections too, or in poverty stricken areas, well then the probability of something bad happening will probably increase.
Does Mexico have a problem? Absolutely.
However, all I'm saying is that a deeper analysis is needed before everyone becomes overly paranoid and skips events like BPM due to media reports with too many holes in it. |

Consider Riviera maya (Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum) a special safe zone... I've been there 10 times since 2006 and nothing ever happened to me or my party. (also never got sick)
Mexico is a very big country and lumping it all together is pretty stupid.
Planning on going back the moment Danny snooze fest diva Tenaglia jumps on the decks at Bal en Blanc. |

| I've been to Cancun and Playa del Carmen but none held a candle to Acapulco in 2001/2002. Definitely in my top party experiences ever... at Palladium especially. Wouldn't set foot in that area now though |

+1... i went almost every year as a kid and hit up palladium a few times when i got older. absolute mayhem. in the later years especially there were always cops patrolling the streets with AK-47s and the like
supposedly now acapulco is considered one of the 10 most dangerous cities in the world. most of the killings i read about appear to be gang-related but it still depresses me how far the city has fallen. hopefully one day it'll be safe to return :( |

but doesn't anyone think it's alarming to see this happen at a 5 star resort?
I can't recall if I've ever been to Mexico. I'm not big on the all inclusive Caribbean holiday thing - but my family went every year to that resort that blew up and killed six people. I wonder if it reopened. |

That was a gaz leak, i.e. an accident, and has nothing to do with current drug wars.
That journalist is just stirring up. |
