| For those still using hardware.. I've had a midisport 8x8 for years (spray painted black because it looks hella gay) and I think I'm ready to trade it in for something smaller, only using the 2 ports anyway, maybe something like this: http://www.samash.com/p/M-Audio_MID...ace-_-MMIDISPRT Something small and bus-powered would be nice. Thoughts? |

| Don't most audio interfaces have a midi port anyways? |

Yeah. And most modern synths just interface with USB.
But the midi port on my audio interface has problems see here |

| Focusrite Saffire 6 is what i'm using cant complain at all. I'v herd the expensive Motu midi interfaces and dont hear any difference. |

| you need to use balanced midi cables to really hear a difference. |

I'm pretty sure he was referring to the MIDI timing, though.
I also just use my audio interface's (MOTU 828mkII) MIDI in/out for my Kurzi and USB for my Virus TI2. When I had more hardware, I was using a MOTU MIDI Express XT (which replaced a MIDIsport 8x8 btw) and it was a great interface. I highly recommend it if you have a lot of synths and need a lot of routing options. |

I bought mine on eBay years ago for like $150 (then sold it last year for $300).
How many ins/outs do you need? Do you need standalone operation? If you only need a few ins/outs (i.e., 5 or less) and don't need standalone (i.e., all MIDI is triggered from your DAW and you don't need to control one piece of hardware with another without your DAW running), then look at the MOTU Micro Lite. If you do need standalone, check out the Micro Express. |

Well, it's not for me actually. I have a friend here in this crazy circuit bending band and he has a load of synths and weird instruments, and he's asking for help wiring up the studio so he can get back into production. He doesn't have a midi interface.
It makes more sense to just trade him my interface for something else, probably this http://www.guitarcenter.com/Cakewal...563-i1448468.gc I only need 2 ports really |
