This is for something i've promised somebody fairly quickly so I needed some advice.
I'm writing a little piano solo which you can hear at the end of this rough sketch, and as it progresses I wanted to bring in some orchestration, ultimately leading back to the left handed motif being at the core of the orchestration. Something is telling me that's not going to work though, but I don't have a few days to faff about with it. I'm not talking melodically as I can sort that out. I'm talking the actual sound of just a low piano part getting lost in orchestration. Perhaps I'm liking the atmosphere of the muffled piano and the reverb, which again might be lost with more instrumentation.
I want to stick with the main idea of what I've got so far though as the 'client' loves the melody so far.

you would normally double with a metallic pitched instrument like a glock. A picollo and flute work if you don't want the attack.
The piano is in a weird register tho in that it will get lost nomatter what. I needs to be higher. Or double it with something else either a solo violin an octave higher to keep the homogenous sound. Try just doubling the right hand and octave higher with the piano. And double the right hand with the violas.
The best way really tho is to create separation by having the strings have a distinct phrasing and the piano playing against that. Really the same mixing things apply like say side chain, except you just tailer the dynamics so that it fits. But ya, the above also applies. And the way you are triggering the notes sounds really artificial. Especially the note transitions. Use volume automation for that.
I would say the piano you have chosen is also making it harder. Really muddy. The strings also could be panned a little better. Lower the violas and 2nd violins or what ever is taking that range a tad, pan the the violins left right, cellos and violas more centered and bass center. Should be wider than the piano. |

Yeah that piano is the freebie 'Felt' piano from Spitfire and it was noodling with that through Valhalla that the idea of the track was spawned.
I think I might leave it in there for the intro as I quite like the quirky tone and the forced hammer noise, but swap it out for a normal acoustic once I start layering it up.
I've just bought Kirk Hunter Diamond and Orchestral Brass 2, which ain't the best libraries in the world but should suffice for individual layering as you've suggested. I'm currently using a string ensemble from Symphobia 2 but it's a little too thick. I've also realised i'm playing chords on the French Horn using an ensemble patch as well which I guess I'll need to use solo horns for to achieve proper Divisi (I think that's the correct term) although how much difference that'll make to the actual mix i'm not sure.
Time to start practising all that orchestration theory I thought i'd never need when I was 16.
Thanks for the advice again. |

| just think of it as a pre-emptive mixing. that is all orchestration really is when you think about it. |
