Feedback needed for my remix of Sean Tyas - Lift

Hi,
Recently I've been working on a remix of Sean Tyas - Lift. Here's a link so you can hear the stage I'm at now:

The only part I'm not happy with is the main saw lead. I find that, after rolling off the low end, I still have to EQ it quite heavily (4+ narrow band 6-18dB cuts) to get rid of problem frequences. Unfortunately this results in the lead sounding too digital and hollow.
I am using the built in Cubase 6 channel EQ as well as the StudioEQ plugin.
Any help with this problem or feedback on the track in general would be very much appreciated!
Thanks,
Phil |

Back 5 years ago or so, Lift was a song which was the end of an era. The uplifting sound which had dominated trance for a while was on the way out and Lift was sort of a final burst of that scene.
Generally, a remix of an old classic should either update the track in it's original form as a 'remake' by mixing it down a little cleaner and mastering it better than the original (such as Sasha - Xpander 2009 remaster) while still keeping the original song intact.
But usually, a remix of a classic should breathe new life into by making it current. As your version is very similar as was already pointed out, -I- would recommend doing a remix which brings the song into the present.
Try making the song 128 bpm, change up the drums to something more housy. I always think leaving the melody alone on classic tracks is good but I am not sure if you will be able to change it much if you do that. Change the synth which carries the lead to something new. More emphasis on a house or electro bass with less of the uplifting gated stuff which is not as in demand now.
That is just what I would do. Best luck. |
