I now know the head bouncer, great guy imo.... But he has explained some of the crap they go through before you or I get there and get them already in a bad mood from the stupid f*cking kids they deal with.
18 yr olds have the right to party and have a blast... But showing up to Ruby trashed and mind f*cked already is not fair to the club or bouncers! |
True! But many 18 year olds are not mature enough to understand the nuisance they create for others. Plus, at 18, its illegal to get alcohol in the club, so I assume they reach the state of mind they want to be in during the party before they arrive.
Yeah - its not fair to the club, but when you make a party accessible to kids, you should expect to deal with this type of . Partially the reason why I have never attended a Torq event to date. |

Your absolutely correct here fella, it is illegal for kids 18 years of old to be drunk walking on the streets in SF and into a club. Its a huge legal liability for a club to deal with since if something was to happen, the city and the law would come down a lot harder then when you yourself OD on the dancefloor or are too drunk and fall over the railing and break your neck. That's just very basic facts. So accordingly, the security HAS to be stricter to try to prevent this and unfortunately we do get a lot of complaints on this and its a very tricky situation because we have all been 18 and wanting to get drunk or high or sneak into places we couldnt really access too. Fake IDs anyone? However, Ruby Security does a pretty good job with controlling this, even though it can be very strict and seem unfair at times.
can they be better? abso-ing-lutley. We are always striving to create a better club environment (pay attention here, CLUB environment) we are not a mid week rave show like some other 18+ EDM events are in the city of San Francisco where piled up kids in full Kandi gear sucking on pacifiers in E-puddles and have EMT teams standing by on a Wednesday night. We pride ourselves with what we have created which is a premier clubbing experience for a younger generation with a wide range of music genres from Trance, Progressive, Commercial House, Dubstep, Hardstyle, Electro, Drum and Bass, Glitch Hop for example. We are celebrating our 4th anniversary later this year and things couldn't be better.
If you want the real truth, the reason that you are going to have to see some of these Trance names on a 18+ Thursdays instead of your perhaps desired Friday or Saturday 21+ and over night is that Trance is not that popular anymore and in order to be able to put on a profitable show that will sell enough tickets to cover the outrageous booking fee's these guys costs these days, making it 18+, is the only way it works. THATS THE TRUTH RIGHT THERE. TORQ does not own the club so we do not get both sides of the income a night can generate, so this is pretty much the plain truth right there on how it has to be done.
its your choice not to come and see your favorite Trance DJ on a 18+ Thursday at Ruby Skye, and thats no problem, However be very clear that your only adding to the problem by reducing the popularity for a genre thats already dying.. Ruby Skye has the entire upstairs area for 21+ and over only and the fearful young kids can't go up there to harass any older seasoned Trance EDM fans, so its really not that bad to be honest. We get plenty of over 21+ EDM fans that gets to see their favorite EMD act on a Thursday for reasonable money, as its will be the only time they will play this particular market this year.
If your a true Trance fan, you should probably thank me for trying to keep a dying genre alive by constantly trying to introduce a new generation into it.
hope that clarifies it. |

I never really had any issues with the 18 year olds at Torq.. Had a great time last week seeing Adrian Lux and so did my 32 year old friend.
I certainly appreciate your effort for bringing these DJs here. Really looking forward to Mat Zo, Gareth Emery and Markus Schulz! |

well said Bjorn. Thanks for replying.
I've always lovd the energy at TORQ events! You just won't find a crow that is happier to have a clean, safe place to enjoy EDM.
I wish I could come to TORQ as often as I used to! It's been seven months since I made it to Ruby! |

In regards to the whole 18+ thing, Bjorn is absolutely telling the truth, opening it up to the 18-21 set, who are now listening to these guys' easily accesbile podcasts on iTunes, is sometimes the only way to bring these guys in town with their high fees.
I'd much rather see these types of guys this way than going to a massive. At least you can go up to the balcony and hang out/have drinks with the older crowd. It actually feels a bit VIP that way. On the other hand, it's a bit different on the dance floor. The youngins do have a lot of energey, but they jump up and down a lot, and I don't really do that anymore, not really my crowd so I tend to go down their for a bit, but ultimately stay upstairs. |

When I went the guy made my stamp fuzzy so I couldnt get upstairs. When we asked the bouncer for a new stamp he started getting extremely angry at me, threatening to kick me out because clearly I wasn 21 and was just trying to drink alcohol!
I go to ruby skye all the ing time and sometimes even have short dialogues with the guy. 18 year old kids partying or not, you don't treat people like that. His argument was "I don't give bad stamps"
Lol.
e: and yeah, none of us purchased any drinks because of it. I eventually got upstairs (long story) when the head security guy came to talk to me (I told the stamp checker what happened and he called him over, etc). So congrats bouncer dude, you lost ruby additional revenue :) |

There is going to be good and bad staff wherever you go. That's just life. At least, you didn't have a Ruby Skye bartender throw a drink on you on NYE just because you tried to pay for your drinks with a credit card. I don't know what this girl's deal was, but she was hella rude. The bartender next to her was super sweet.
If you wanna be a pimp, mitz, you gotta be tough in the club. So the next time you see ja in da club you can throw a hard left and knock a sucker out. |

Pretty informative post Bjorn - thanks. Main reason I haven't made an event yet is because i live up in San Jose so its really the distance (work takes priority these days). Miss the college days when I used to drive 3 hours up to Toronto from upstate New York, even if there was a local DJ headlining but I don't think I have that kind of energy anymore :P .
This helps though. I wasn't even aware that there was a separate 21+ section on Torque nights. Will definitely try hitting one up when I dont have 8 am meetings the following Friday. |

I somehow missed your post before. Very well done, and I agree with it all until the bolded. I don't feel it's my responsibility to drive an hour, pay $20 for parking, and then get hassled by security and have everyone in our party be told "this ID isn't you, where did you get it? you aren't 21, you don't even look 18, etc etc" on and on. We are all 24-25+.
Since you work at ruby, the only guy who has ever given us problems (and ALWAYS is the one and only) is the tall (def over 6 feet) black guy who never smiles. Sorry, I don't know his name :/. Sorry for the poor descriptor. He's usually the guy who is standing for in the GA line. The guy who has always done the will call is ING AWESOME and I love him. He's super friendly. The other guy in question always feels the need to ruin our night with his bull testosterone power tripping or whatever.
Anyways, I was talking to some other people and they knew exactly who I was talking about, and have been hassled before.
once again, i understand the whole 18+ creates a lot of extra stress but we come to ruby all the time. I usually say hello to the aforementioned will call guy, but I don't expect them to recognize any of the customers since there are hundreds every night.
that being said, I refused to be treated poorly when I am paying $50/ticket. It sure is tough that these guys have to deal with drunk 140 pound 18 year olds, you know, them being 200, 250 pounds and muscular and all. It's unacceptable to treat people the way they do with the ticket prices and the quality of event ruby is striving for. They have a job to do and they are doing it poorly. They should treat patrons with respect and if they are causing a problem then kick them out. The way this particular guy acts it can/will only escalate situations. They are (or rather, he is) the weakest link in the chain.
Just to be clear- it is this single guy who causes the problems for my particular group - coincidence, maybe. We also went and got dinner afterwards in Dec with one of the other security dudes who was awesome. :)
Hate to sound like I'm bitching but that guy. If we're being friendly and not causing a problem why does he feel the need to unleash on us (and others)? What is the point? We had trouble once with him on a 21+, three times at 18+. I never made a complaint or anything because I figured nothing would be done :)
You might ask yourself why this pisses us off. It's a huge buzz kill and awful way to start your night.
In any case, I wish you the best with Torq nights. Maybe some improvement can be made, but we won't be going back to a Torq night. |
