Firstly there is nothing wrong with using presets and samples, its all how you use them.
I like how people describe the mood of their song :P Often very delusional.
I recommend comparing your tracks to another of the same feel.
Your kick is very soft. That Vcoded acid is annoying, too many acidic sounds in my opinion. Where is your bass??
The first part of your song is very repetitive, in the break down the strings are very low and you bring in the same element once again.
I would work on structure and keeping things as interesting as possible.
Goodluck.

Thanks for the honest feedback - I'm still fairly new to this ...
The bass is something I still need to crack TBH - it's been tough developing something that doesn't completely take over when it up in the mix so you can actually sense it...
Woudl love any advice you may have to offer - or online tutorials you may know of.

Well for the bass what i do.
Find a kick and bass that complement each other, just play around with the kick and bass till they sound great. This is the foundation of any track in my opinion.
Kick and bass to be mono of course.
Low Cut all other sounds!!! This is very important in getting seperation of the low end.
Dont play with compression or eq on the kick. I tend to not use much compression at all, unless the sound has a massive dynamic range.
Also dont listen to the song over and over again. It will start to sound great to you, and only you :]

I thought it was cool. Sounds pretty original for this day in time. It has some Oakenfold goa feel to it.

Love the oldschool feel to this, and you have accomplished some big parts of trance per say in this one. The concept is awesome, and I enjoyed the range of notes you used, the progression is lucid and you created a lot of forward movement and energy which is awesome.
BUT, other than that, the mix still needs a great deal of work. A lot of the higher leads, the screaching ones need to be brought down, and your kick needs to be brought up. Open up the lower freq's on your kick, i here no bass at all. snare is a bit loud. Doesnt feel like there is a lot of room for your cymbals either with those higher end leads.
Great structure, great vibes, but its a bit loud, and needs more low end. Clean up the mix and this will be a great track. nice work.

Thanks for all the helpful comments. I'll definitely act on these and re-up another version soon

The advice received so far has been a revelation ...
It's sounding so much better now ... I've changed the kick in a major way and introducing a low cut on non bass orientated tracks means I can actually hear the bass line ... yay!!:gsmile:
By no means the final mix down but I think I've improved the lower end quite a bit.
I know it's bad - but this is a headphones mix down, hasn't been in front of my monitors as I'm away on business at the moment and not back home til Friday.
Anyway - wanted to get this out for some feedback to see if I'm going in the right direction.

BTW - was a bit of a stab in the dark but set the low cut at 270hz - does this sound reasonable?

This sounds a lot better, and the kick does stand out more, but it is a bit punchy for my personal taste. I personally love thumping, deep kicks, with not much of a treble click on them. Its sitting a bit awkward, almost like a 707. a lot more range in this track now. Now turn down those screach type leads and you will be golden! Dont with it till you get it w/ your monitors!!!
