It's obvious you were monitoring on cheap-ass Bearfoots and not a quality KRK RP5. With a sub. Or two. I'm almost positive DJ RANN recommended them highly in his review the other day. ;)

Motherfuckers.

Analogue, Sidechain, Mono in clubs and KRK all in one thread.

I'm off to snort a line of ants.

Yea but if you use a sub to boost the lows the RP5s lack....Or two subs panned hard L/R....

That's the proper way to mix low end.

Analog sidechains itself, anyone with a DX7 knows that:rolleyes:

I'm actually disappointed with the digital nature of my Jupiter 8V and was considering abandoning the ITB approach in favor of a more analog feel. I'm pretty sure I'd get that with a good VA like a DX7 from what I've read.

My real Jupiter 8 died when I was doing some circuit bending I saw in a You Tube tutorial. Sure did make some colorful smoke though. The factory MIDI still works so I just use it as a keyboard for Massive when I make Brostep.

I just got a mint 808/boxed and I found a tut online to make it do cool 909 sounds by adding a couple car audio caps to the power supply so Imma try that next. Anyone got a 303 for sale? A mint one as I don't want to have to undo a bunch of half assed mods to make my own.

Is it true that all software sounds warmer and more analogue on a Mac?

It's just a rumor. But it's a 'created one'. You see, most mac guys know a truck going back to the MacII days. But it only works with certain types of speakers due to the materials used in cone construction.

KRK's get a bad rep because the yellow dye in the cone stiffens it and does not allow the clarity of other monitors. The trick is to find some leather boot treatment. It's a greasy substance that softens the leather. The old Mac guys learned that if you apply it directly to the cone at certain degrees (based on 12 o'clock being 0-360) that the cone softens and then resonates at certain frequencies better than others, giving a sense of movement and a more analogue feel as the cone reproduces the frequency spectrum.

But you'll play hell getting them to give the speaker size equation.

Today, most people I know just use Vaseline on the surround of the cone at the 4, 6, 8 and 12 oclock position. Not too much as then you get a flubby response, but just enough to break down the stiffness in certain areas.

After applying it, let it set for about 72 hours, then set up a sine wave at 15Hz and play it at moderate volume for at least 24 hours to allow the movement/friction to 'work' into the material.

At that point, you'd be hard pressed to tell that anything you put through it wasn't 100% pure analogue.

WinXP still sounds better than 7, too....

The iPod earbuds must get the same treatment, cuz mine sound very analogue.

All Bs aside, watch the episode of Pensado's Place with Tricky Stewart. He actually says that all laptops have a different sound and they joke about old ones becoming vintage gear.

While he's talking more about older versions of software on them sounding different so some new versions, he does imply that the laptop 'hardware' is a contributing factor. He says he keeps his old ones for that reason.

I'm not kidding.

Does anybody know of a plugin that will give my custom-built PC that Dell sound? What does Skrillex use?

I don't think it's a plug. Skrillex uses a UPS between his laptop to give his bass that extra punch. Same principle as caps in Car audio. When the bass hits the stock laptop power supply can't handle the load so the ups works as a cap and feeds the motherboard soundcard a consistent and uninterrupted signal of power.

Dell's are infamous for their power supplies so to duplicate the sound, use a variac and dial it down to 103 volts. It's like EVH and his Marshalls.

I probably shouldnt let this out as there will be another rush of wannabees, but Sonny also uses programs coded in Cobol and Machine code. It's more vintage sounding than C++ or Visual Basic. He said pure binary sounds too '1930s' and reminds him of 78rpm records due to binary's inherent lack of headroom.

Java of course has well known latiency issues.
