I'll have a look at those JBLs. I'm definitely in a small space, with not much leeway to move stuff around. Been using K701's for mixing, so I can check the low end on them as well.
Cheers! |
No problem!
I've had mine for 18 months and absolutely love them. I honestly don't know hoe they managed to make speakers that good, for that money, that somehow don't suffer from the usual afflictions/problems that you get with small monitors.
Only thing I would suggest is to get them on decent stands or mounts to make the most of them. |

Possibly dumb question (and my dog tastes bad anyway - just an FYI) but when you did your big search, did the JPL portion include the MSC1 controller for them? Ever use one or have any experience with them?
I'm curious if it's meaningless without the sub being involved and I know it's no 'cure all' but is it worth the 300 bucks for less than ideal rooms or more a gimick thing.
Likewise for the IK ARC system or (gulp) KRK's thing.
Sorry if you addressed this earlier and I missed it. |

HS80's are excellent but won't work well in a small untreated space. If your room is small then go for a pair of JBL LSR2326P's and pair it with some monitoring headphones to check bass levels. |
Just on this do you know if they will connect to my NI Audio 8 dj interface? As mentioned Ive nt worked with active monitors before so not sure.
Thanks |

Yeah they'll be fine. You've got a set of RCA stereo outs and the HS80s have got a jack input so you just need a balanced mono RCA to jack cable for each monitor. |

..another question :)
the audio dj 8 has no master output volume control. Am I correct in saying that I will have no control of the speaker volumes if they are active? The only way I could change the volume of the speakers would be through my master output in Logic? |

Yup, you could either get a passive volume knob to sit between the interface and monitors, or just buy a basic audio interface to use instead of the DJ8 |

@normie - No it wasn;t in this thread but we've all discussed thm before.
My take on room compensations systems is that they are a band aid, and not a cure. I don't really like anything in my signal chain that is adding real time effects (mainly EQ and panning laws) to my signal. I think that most people can really make massive differences in their setups by simple and incredibly cheap changes like putting sand or lead shot in you speaker stands or changing your listening position to a more effective one or even just properly setting up your gain staging and monitor calibrations.
I also think that when you're at the point of considering shelling out $300 for a system like that, you're better off spending it on room treatment - it will do more for your monitoring in the long run.
The last thing is that even on a bad monitoring situation, I prefer to know the faults and learn them, rather than introduce a "half fix" like some of those systems. My experience overall has not been positive with them - it wasn't disasterous and in fairness it did make a minor improvement but I couldn't get it out of my head (nor hearing) that this wasn't a true translation of the signal.

Sorry, not to be a twat (that will make a change!) about it, but there's actually no such thing as a "balanced mono RCA". You could get an unbalanced RCA to mono 1/4" Jack cable, or if you want to go really special you could go pseudo balanced RCA to TRS 1/4" jack and join the conductors from tip and ring together at the RCA end. The only thing is that it's not as effective as when the RCA is the destination, and not the source as in this case.
Finally, ambient_chris, you really should consider a volume control on the HS80's as they are damn loud, not to mention software volume control is a pain, I wouldn't go for the TC level pilot as my first choice. They have degredation problems and I don;t like the fact it's near impossible to mark them with pre-set calibration points.
I would go with the SM Pro Audio Nano Patch 2 - it's less money and does what it says on the tin. |

I actually thought that as I typed, but then I knew you'd come in and correct me anyway.
True story that :D
And plus one on that shiny knob, i've not heard good things. |

I mean, some do, it's just not necessary. You simply don't need one. |
