i am new to trance, and one thing that i have been doing that is v useful is remaking the synth sounds from sample cds with the aid of a freq analyzer.
sometimes they give you a wet and a dry loop/sample and this has really bought home the importance of that big wash of delays/reverb that you often hear in trance
one sound on the sample pack is just a single sawtooth pluck and sounds very unimpressive on its own. But the wet version sounds fantastic
Does anyone have any tips for creating this huge wash of echoes/reverb?
Is it just a case of using delay followed by very long reverb tails?
Are there any particular units people use?
Do people just have one super long delay/verb and bus everything the want effected to that? i presume if you had more than 1 things would get too full v quickly.
I have lexicon plug ins for reverb which are supposed to be good, but don't seem to do the job for this sound.
Have had much better luck with the echoboy reverb presets so far, but still not reaching that shimmering texture that you seem to hear a lot in trance, even if its quite subtle and low in the mix etc.
Thank you for any insights
Chris

I think you sort of answered your own question.
The best tips I can give you is to link all sounds to the same reverberation module. Otherwise, the mix can get really muddy and downright awful. Also, by doing this, you save CPU by only using one instance of this effect.
As for creating big, lush reverbs, I'd just say go experiment with it and see what works best. If you think the reverb plugin you use doesn't cut it for you, just get another one online. Try epicVerb for instance, it's free! ;)
One last thing, if your mix still sounds too muddy and blurry, try toning down your reverb, because it could dominate the mix way too much. Maybe side-chaining the reverb a tiny bit could also help, so that it doesn't clash with the kick.

EDIT: didnt read properly :P
Yes Delay+ verb will add what your looking for, but try be subtle instead of a massive delay and reverb.
Also to add that nice tension play with the predelay

I'm not gonna respond to your question because you said "that is v useful", I'm assuming the v is short for very, and I will treat it as so for the remainder of my post.
you feel like punching me in the face? bring it on you ******. I know multiple fighting styles, and I also carry a switchblade with me at all times. Something ing tells me that you'd be better off keeping your arms down at your sides. If you can't ing put "cause" and "effect" together in that pathetic brain of yours, I'll help you out here. You'll be standing face to face with me, and let me ing tell you, it'll already be too ing late to back down at that point. You might decide "well , I might as well stay true to my word and throw a ing punch". This is where you will go wrong. I hope you don't have a job that requires two ing hands, because you're going to be missing one after I'm done with you. I'll casually divert your fist off to the side, as you suddenly realize you may have gotten yourself into something you can't back up. You'll try to regroup and pull your arm back, but that wont be easy when I jab my spear-pointed Benchmade switchblade straight through the bone in your forearm, and proceed to rip your entire ing forearm and hand off in one quick pull. At this point, you'll probably spend 2 seconds in shock. I say 2 seconds, because thats the amount of time you'll have before I reverse the knife in my hand, and uppercut it straight through your throat. You'll spend your last few seconds gurgling blood, and wondering where you went wrong. After that, I'll be forced to take care of any witnesses who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Nothing a few quick choke slams can't fix, followed by a nice gentle slice across the jugular with the Benchmade.
Now, mother******, you sure you want to go through with that punch?

A convolution reverb will sound better than the lexicon stuff. IF its not convolution, then it may be coming from the virus.

That "huge wash of echoes/reverb" is one of the reasons I love trance. I think disortion plays a role in it too.
One of the producers I think creates this well is Breakfast (Casey Keyworth). I have seen in interviews him mention being able to use distortion is a good tool.
Both of the breakdowns of these tracks are how I interpret the sound you are speaking of.

mmm very interesting thanks

this is still a "wip" but that "trance ambience" is very important. Ive been trying to capture it. Its hard. Sometimes I just want to slap on a reverb with a "super trancey" patch already applied but it doesnt do any good without any substance. Anyways, good luck. Trance is a pretty difficult genre to make so keep trying.
What do you think? Trance Ambience?

What are you gonna do, tough guy? Huh? I bet you wouldn't be so tough without your nunchucks.
Listen ******, go ahead and check your attitude. One more outburst like this and I'll be on that redeye over to your stinky korean village in east London. Afterwich I'm gonna round up you and your scrawny, 5'4 buddies, wrap you all up in seaweed, and feed you bleached rice til your stomachs explode like the greasy bottomfeeding pigeons you are.
