It's the same in European countries of latin descent (Italy, France, Romania, Spain, Portugal). Maybe not to that degree, however people are very social, chatty, it's easy to meet new friends and so forth.
The more you go up north, the more this social trait disappears.

Wow, and I thought people in Japan were distant :stongue:

I don't think your skin is quite dark enough to pass the "suspected Muslim" threshold. Spend a bunch of time in the sun and you might, though.

There were once these American missionaries in my city a few years ago. They told me I wouldn't be welcomed to the USA (I had beard back then so I guess they though I was middle-eastener).

I don't think its that common in the US just because we have a fairly diverse population... I mean you might make mention of people you know if its brought up in conversation to you, but you wouldn't just start listing off people that are asian or mexican or black or white or whatever just for the hell of it.
On the other hand if someone says like "oh I know this Japanese guy so and so" you might mention that you knew some Japanese person if it as in relation to the topic at hand...
But yea just to be like "oh you are with a asian person, I know an asian person" would just be ing weird, not even stupid, more like mental sort of... :nervous:

Makes sense, but I believe there's yet another difference: we're quite diverse ourselves, but whereas it seems normal to say "I'm Mexican/Armenian/Italian" in the US just because your parents are from these countries, we'd find this extremely pedantic and random (if you were born here, you're Brazilian - unless, strangely enough, your parents came from the Far East). Hell, our census only lists people as "White/Mixed/Black/Native"... Asians can feel free to list themselves as white (as the government is fond of doing) or mixed (as the most puzzled amongst them tend to do).

This happens to me a lot. I know all about everybody's great great great grandparents who were from Ireland and yada yada yada.

That's very odd. When I meet someone who is asian. I like to first talk about Hiroshima, Nagasaki or the Vietnam war. Then I ask them if dog tastes like chicken.
