Marcu Vershi - Tough EP

Despite his youth, Marcu Vershi is clearly well-versed in the history of progressive house sounds. It courses rich through the veins of his work.

Here he gets nice and loose, with plenty of lively percussive action embedded amongst wavy, slo-mo house beats that lope like lazy teenagers on a humid summer's day. The original track "Tough" is vividly coloured, with plenty of darting glissando melodies..

Franzis-D remix is marbled with vinyl hiss and crackle, its congas sound distant and thin synths speak of the future while a jazzy keyboard loop keeps things firmly rooted in the past. It feels cosy and familiar, surreptitiously growing into a tastefully triumphant swagger. Ugly Drums strips things back to cute little jazzy stabs, flailing percussion and lethargic drums that wiggle with each understated rotation. It's smoky and cosy basement house for those sensuous early evenings, whereas John Ov3rblast remix is a much busier, chattier analogue house workout that deals in a pleasing rawness.

The remixes comes from Stanisha, who's just as phlegmatic here as he's been on his recent records for Insomniafm Records, he teases short phrases from the original over a scuffed, shuffling 4/4 beat and gelatinous sub bass. Sonically and conceptually, than most house tracks these days, the remix of Fyono brimming with bright chords and counterpoint melodies, plucked synths and vocoder-like pads that bubbles like a pot full of boiling water and sounds unlike any other track I can think of.
