guestlist vs. tickets

So a lot of times on these forums I see events being posted at really high volume clubs like Avalon, Marquee, etc. and I see people post "tickets? nah, I'll just get on the discount guestlist!"

May I ask why this is preferable? I always arrive at Avalon and am very surprised by how many people there are in line even at 10pm. I walk in with ZERO line, get my ticket scanned, and am on the dancefloor 2 minutes later. I'm a little confused as to why you would do the guest list.

Is it because you're not sure you want to go, and want to keep your options open? I kind of get that, I guess, but even if you decide to go last minute, waiting in line for an hour or more to get in via the guestlist just doesn't sound like fun. On top of that, it usually closes at 10 or 11 so if you're not at the front of the line by that point, you're screwed.

So again, could someone perhaps explain the logic to me? Because I always buy a ticket... but maybe I'm wrong.

i personally believe its much better buying a presale ticket then it is to be on a discount list. On many occasions, the early bird presale is just as cheap as a discount list admission.

but i think you're right. discount list gives you more options. you're not stuck having to go to an event and be assed out the money if you bought presales.

Comp list > tickets or discount list.

its been a years since i've seen a discount guestlist line take more than 10-20 minutes to get in via. No question buying early for Avalon if you are 100% sure you are going is best, but if you aren't positive you are going that night the disc. guest list is the best way to go IMO, especially since you aren't out any $ if you can't go and had bought a presale. Also, from my experience many clubs honor the disc. guest list as long as you were in line as of the cutoff time.

other than marquee ... on a std night at avalon with a non-mega popular dj... discount list line moves fast.. avalon is not really there to hold up the line like other clubs..

and there are people in this world who feel they have all the time in the world to wait in line.. versus having to pay in advance...

Specifically for Avalon the guestlist typically closes at 11 and only moves fast until 10:30 or so. After that it get slower and slower, so if you get in line at 10:45 there is no way you'll make it. Since the capacity control you still need to go early even with presales so there may not be much difference any more.

I knew I could count on you to chime in on this thread. Thanks for the information.

wait so just to confirm... free > discount > full price?

so I guess what I'm hearing here is that most people that do discount list either

a) don't mind getting there super early (I do, however at Avalon you might as well if you want to make it onto the dance floor these days... so might be a good idea)

b) aren't sure if you're going.

I'm down with A people, if you have the stamina, but I usually go to big DJ shows so as far as B goes, I'm sure. So I'd rather buy a ticket if I know I'm going with a big group and will get there late, and I'll do discount list if I'm just going with 1-2 people and we're gonna make it a long night.

Does that seem reasonable?

Why you always trolling, Josh? DJ Troll in the house -- JA -- Josh Allen. I love it! I knew I could still come to TA and find you trolling and bitching about something. I just finished a new mix and put extra cheese on it for you so you can bitch about it having too many songs from artists you don't know about, but somehow you heard the songs at Burning Man and still have the melodies inside your head -- "woo woo woo woo woo woo woo woo woo woo woo woo woo woo woo woo woo woo woo woo woo!!!" :tongue2

Bigperf knows what's up. Comp list... save your money to pay Joshua Allen inside the club! ;)
