This was close to the peak for me in trance, after this it pretty much went downhill with the generic ASOT sound. So i switched to listening to 80s.

some of my favorites through 2003:

I suppose my experience was probably different because dance music was still a pretty niche thing in the U.S. and decidedly unpopular in the part of the country where I grew up (the south). So I was used to being far out of sync with the musical tastes and fashions around me. And I wasn't hooked in to the net's hive mind with respect to EDM yet, so until the mid 2000s I never had a sense of whether what I liked was popular or in style. But I guess when I did finally catch up with dance music trends, I was pretty disappointed in them.

Yup, this was my situation as well, even though I got my start in dance music a bit earlier ('97-98) and I grew up in a part of the US that has quite a history with dance music. I was a staunch fan of prog in 2003 and remember that time period a lot of great music coming out, especially prog breaks and dark tribal stuff. Along with the trance of that era - disk 2 of Nyana got a ton of play from me.

When I finally got more active in the internet EDM scene, it timed with the rise of minimal, that made me just go "WTF"?

I'm kidding I've got better punch lines that was just the warmup. I meant to say "2003? This site's been around a lot longer than that and frankly by the way you act I thought you were the owner"

This is hard house but definitely a reminder of the era:

For me 2003 will always be the year of Paul van Dyk and Nothing But You. I still get goosebumps every time I hear that song remembering how absolutely lethal his sets used to be from 96-2003. I saw him at Avalon in Hollywood a couple of months back and it was his best set IMHO since those days but he still drops too much cheesy vocal stuff. His on the fly rework of Cirez D's On Off was insanely good at avalon.

Till this day I think Nothing But You was the most overrated tune of that year.
BlueSky
James Holden also had a blast in that year.
