Does political discussion make anyone else feel dirty?

| Seriously, I engage in it and I feel like my IQ has dropped fifteen points or something. It seems so effective at bringing out the stupid in everyone. |

Yeah, and it's such a shame because political discourse can serve to shed light on some really tricky subjects and help people to see them in different ways. Instead, it's all about shock value now and extremes.
Nixon once said, when asked if he'd like to see the parties undergo an ideological realignment (as has since occurred), that "it would be a great tragedy...if we had our two major political parties divide on what we would call a conservative-liberal line...I think one of the attributes of our political system has been that we have avoided generally violent swings in administrations from one extreme to the other. And the reason we have avoided that is that in both parties there has been room for a broad spectrum of opinion."
