No I think you are dead on with this probing question. For years now the battle over which of the two is better has raged and as a result, tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of man-hours have been wasted on boards like this arguing their individual merits.

IMAGINE how many songs were lost...that could have been written if all those poor wayward souls had spent it writing music to move the world. The sick would have been cured, the blind would not see, the planet cooled and maybe, just maybe someone in an A&R dept would have discovered then instead of Justin Beiber..

Truly, the world would have been a better place.

Now, we must settle this once and for all and prevent another teenager of questionable genetic identification from going full emo on radio stations across the planet.

As such I will put forth that software is plainly the better choice since it can perfectly emulate that coveted analogue quality that so many know and love. And whereas with hardware you are locked in to the particular analogue or virtual analogue characteristics that were built in, most software worth it's salt allows you to dial in to your production, an infinitely variable level of true analogue goodness. And warmth. And stuff.

Hardware simply has no place in modern music production and is only still around to separate fetishistic collectors from their money. No where is this more apparent than in the recently released "Dr. Drum" software.

Now if someone wants to go and spend $200,000 on a refurbished SSL4K, another 8 grand on a Jupiter 8, several thousand on hardware drum machines, and a ton more on various EQs, comps and instruments, that's not my problem. It's not like they have a prayer of matching the sound quality of RealTek converters and the modern crisp sound of software. I actually feel bad for them wasting their time and spouting off nonsense words like 'quality' and such.

No, software is the way to go. The automobile put a bunch of buggy whip makers out of business too and they whined about it. Same here. There is clearly no good reason for this continued praise of hardware. It should be banned outright.

For the children.

The real advantage to malware in that it creates a very analogue like instability in the system. Especially when it crashes the system totally and you have to start over. Sometimes that 'starting everything from scratch' method after reloading all your software on a new HD can be just the ticket for those spur of the moment creative decisions.

Personally I think everyone should try it if for no other reason than the experience of having done it. It can add a sense of perspective lacking in the modern music producer.
