So EDM is mainstream. What comes next? (pg. 2)

"Underground" isn't really "underground", it's just what the majority of people aren't doing. This has less to do with the music itself than the culture that surrounds it.

For instance, as I've mentioned in the past, we host occasional late-night, alcohol-free parties at our place, with an intimate, mature crowd (don't think there's anyone under 25, and most of us are in our 30s and 40s), with DJs dropping everything from obscenely wonky, current Techno releases that you'll never hear played out anywhere else in this city, to classic 80s and 90s cuts on vinyl, to digital controllerists (I hear that's what they like to be called these days ;) ) and live instrument/PA hybrids. The electronic music we showcase is vital to what we do, but we're the antithesis of booze-soaked, posh club settings or huge arena affairs that are the hallmarks of today's EDM culture - most wouldn't touch what we do with a ten foot pole, simply because it isn't what's "in". Same goes with the live Jazz speakeasy, the Burners' comp parties that demand some level of participation from everyone in attendance, and the alcohol-free live music venue that showcases absolutely brilliant performers you'll rarely see in popular Toronto venues - all of these exist in this city, but unless you're actively seeking something outside of the usual fare, you'll never hear about them while at your favourite club, on Facebook, in NOW, or on this board.

There's nothing original in this world - everything's been done over and over again, ad infinitum, renamed and repackaged for a new generation that always mistakenly thinks they're the first to have discovered it. :)

Personally, I'm hoping the next big thing is badass Techno DJs who don't give two s when something was released, scratch using 45s and mix tracks like "Wipeout" and "Surfin' Bird" into their sets, just because...well, just because.

no one can sound like maceo plex lol, guy ing murdered every single party he played in miami, no one could match this guys energy and track selection after he played, only art department when they played the boat together.

and funkagenda is a genre hopping trend whore, he should stick to what hes been doing in the last few years lol

If you are looking for the next big thing in music then what your asking for is the next big fad or bandwagon for people to jump on.

I honestly don't want to know. I have loved my EDM for the last 12+ years and I don't plan on switching any time soon.

The music I do come across over the last 3 years has lacked in quality, and the sets I've listened to aren't as good as they were up till about 2007-08, which is really disappointing.

It may be because I've become subdued to worst quality, but I'm hoping im not losing interest in EDM...

I get what you're asking but don't think you'll get the best answer on here or almost anywhere else for that matter. Most EDM fans in it for longer than a year or two don't give a flying fack about the mainstream so could care less where it goes. Secondly imo it's pretty hard to predict even if you wanted to. The mainstream stuff of almost any genre consists of music (great, good, bad, and horrid) and it's creator/s that are extremely well marketed. Just look at the biggest EDM artists these days. deadmau5 has the head and big show + big label. Guetta has been teaming up with already established mainstreamers so he's piggybacked them to fame. So you want to find the answer to that question read up on what the recording industry wants to make big and what MTV and all the other mediums are promoting. My 2 cents, that'll be your answer.
