I'm actually pretty interested because this is a rare DJ set not just live set.

While I'm probably biased since I have worked with the guys for about five years, I am also very respectful of people's opinions when it comes to music - many TA's who know me will vouch for that. I mainly DJ tech & progressive house/trance, but I have a tremendous amount of respect for IM. Just wanted to make a few friendly points...

-Only two songs off the new album (out early May) are in the vain of 'step'... why knock anyone for always trying new things? I think innovation should be encouraged in music, it's the only way to progress genres... And 'step' is not IM's new direction, so it would be wrong to pigeonhole them in that regard, it is simply experimentation, an attempt at trying something different - the very thing that has brought their niche project to the forefront of the global dance music scene over the last 15 years.

-Empirically when IM has tried new things, or experimented with new sounds, their fan base goes into shock. "Becoming Insane" caused a frenzy among the IM loyal when it first came out, and now it is one of their most popular tunes. While it is true the first single 'URSF' was not the typical IM sound, it has been destroying dance floors, and incorporates Reggae in the breakdown among other styles, something you don't always hear in standard 'step' music. Their new single 'Nation of Wusses' is Trance, not dub-step at all (Beatport Link). So you can see, the new album will be a mixed bag of solid tunes, not just 'psy-step garbage'.

-To say these guys 'barely DJ anymore' is on its face not true. While it is definitely a fact that the last 5-7 years have seen an increase of live shows involving the full band, this is not to say IM hasn't also had their share of DJ gigs between (they do on average 120 shows per year, a number of which are DJ sets). And when IM does do their live act, they are working extremely hard... harder than most DJ's standing behind the decks for two hours. When IM DJs, they are really DJing, IE: playing their own tunes/remixes (unlike many other DJs), mixing tracks, etc. etc. At a time when there are some mainstream DJ's that aren't even DJing when they preform (we've all seen the Angello video), I think real DJ's should be applauded. Anyway, this Sutra show is a DJ set, so boom boom!

-Last thing I will say is this: The IM live show as you knew it (with the band) is an endangered species, ergo this Sutra DJ set... this year Infected will be debuting a new stage production for a hefty US tour to coincide with the album launch. The design and concept is still on the down-low, but I am on the soundstage as we speak to witness testing, and it is unlike anything I've ever seen before... I have seen the stages for Daft Punk, Skrillex, Deadmau5, and many more... I think this new chapter will be very well received... a step back into the world of EDM.

These guys are hard working, talented musicians (and family guys with kids) who are constantly trying to evolve their music. IM isn't for everyone AND all people are for sure entitled to their own feelings, but to brush them off as 'sellouts', 'garbage', and 'posers' is I think a bit extreme. Anyway, always down for a friendly music discussion. :)

Best regards,
Randy

Randy, I LOVED Becoming Insane when it came out lol. I like IM a lot, but when every one of their Facebook posts had people blasting the psy-step garbage it shows me that they are ignoring wisdom to make a quick buck off the bro-step scene. I'll check out their new album's tour when it comes back again just because their shows are amazing, but I'm just disappointed in the direction they seem to be going

Haha I like Becoming Insane too :)
And as I said, 'step' is not the direction they are going, they are just experimenting, seeing what would happen if IM and 'step' had a baby. So worry not, I'm happy you are still open for what's to come :)
