Pro Mixing Tips

If your don't have Reason or Record I think you can still Learn from this.

interesting to note how some pro mix with a compressor in the master channel, also nice tip the one to feed the delay to the mixer so that the feedback gets re-equalized every time.

" A mix is never finished, only abandoned", he, totally agree there.

Thx.

Interesting to hear he mixes into a master bus compressor which I've for a while felt is the way to go despite the old purists argument.

He asks really how many of us have perfect listening enviroments and implies it's almost none of us which makes me feel a whole lot better!

It's not a purist argument as such, just that it's a very bad idea unless you really know what you're doing; The reason some pro's do it is that it stops them having to do it at a mastering or even stem stage - i.e. I'll put it on to the master to save me some routing and time for something I'll end up doing otherwise.

Conversely, the problem with an amateur doing it is that bad compression on the master stage will do them no favors at all; it can mask spikes induced by bad level and peak control, it can add mud to an already struggling mix and mass with your overall dynamics.

I think the point at which you put a compressor on the master with confidence, is the stage when you realize it's more efficient than doing at groups or sub group phases. It essentially makes sense to do so, not because some pro you watched does it.
