You Guessed it, Floh-Ri-Duh
http://developers.slashdot.org/stor...ence-department
| quote: | Wow, no one saw this coming. The University of Florida announced this past week that it was dropping its computer science department, which will allow it to save about $1.7 million. The school is eliminating all funding for teaching assistants in computer science, cutting the graduate and research programs entirely, and moving the tattered remnants into other departments.
Let’s get this straight: in the midst of a technology revolution, with a shortage of engineers and computer scientists, UF decides to cut computer science completely? |
Of course, why cut the liberal arts department? Where would this world be without all those Creative Writing majors (soon-to-be-baristas at Starbucks)?

Rick Scott.
How corrupt can a governor get?
Doesn't matter because the American citizenry keeps electing these pieces of to office.
I'm happy I'm graduating this year. The annual 15 percent - soon to be more - tuition hikes are ridiculous. And it's all because of this man. |

This education system needs reform, I happen to admire European education. My German friends pay nothing (or almost nothing) for higher education, they have a much better grasp of their field, they advance quicker, they go into the workforce quicker and they are best prepared (not universal). In addition, Their system is not structured to milk or generate the profits that US institutions have grown used to. And for what purpose? to build a new Football stadium.
Make exams tougher all together, make it selective, but make education free for citizens. If you want profit, generate that by funding, research projects, international students, i don't know. 'Oh, but we can't make the exams and selection process tougher, all the others will be 'left behind'. Well, tough luck, the German system filters out their students from early on. We should do the same.
Make the schools tough, free, and selective only to those that really want to pursue their education. Young adults leaving school with enormous debt is not the right way to treat the citizenry of any country. |

I remember reading somewhere that they were transferring everything to hardware instead of software. And mainly they're cutting funding for research, not cutting the department entirely.
That's unfortunate, because my buddy Luke moved back to Florida with the intention to get his PHD in CS at UF but looks like that won't be happening :( |

| The problems that the US has with education and tuition for post-secondary schools makes me appreciate Ontario education even more. OSAP ftw. Guaranteed loan for me. I gotta pay it back when I start work, but that is interest free up to 6 months after I graduate. |

Not sure this thread warrants such a response. I mean, come on, there are a lot better reasons to want to leave the U.S. ; this thread, for example...

Don't think becoming ex-patriots (or at the very least attaining dual citizenship) isn't on some of our bucket lists. I mean, have you been to America, outside of New York!? Well, if you haven't, it's mostly just ewoks & sand-people...
Oh, also America stops you from leaving America. You know that whole spiel about Freedom and Liberty? That's how they get you... :sadgreen: |
