Automation Question (Ableton)....

This might seem like a N00b question, but it. It's been bugging me for a while.
When working on arrangement mode and I want to make several tempo changes, I usually go to the master channel and plot my points. That usually works for me. But, how do I dial in EXACT tempo changes. For instance from 128 to 130 to 135 bpm? If I plot the tempo, it will give me approximate values (128.4, etc). I want exact ones.
Same question for volume automation on individual channels. It's usually approximate, but I want exact values.

| hmmm, this got me thinking a bit. I think you still need to plot it on the master, but enlarge that channel strip to give you more resolution and hold cntrl as you shift the automation line for finer adjustment. Not sure of any other shortcuts myself, but there probably are some. |

yes that is one option, holding the control key as you move the node will def help. Are you adjusting a lot of clips or just like 128-> 127 once? If once, I have an easier way for you to do this... |

| Multiple times. If it's just once, you can type in a start point and end point on the master channel than just draw the line, so that's easy. But doing it several times is where it gets me. |

I emailed Ableton and got a response back.
"To make exact tempo changes in Live, we recommend recording a tempo automation in Live with the global record button activated.
If you change the session tempo over the tempo field in the top left corner while Lives playback, exact values will be recorded onto the mastertrack. You can also type in values in the tempo field while Lives playback.
Once you have straight values in the automation on the master track you can move the automation lanes further.
The same workaround would apply for volume changes on tracks in Live 8.
We hope this could help, please get back to us if we can be of further help."

I don't understand what your problem is. I basically explained that before, it's not rocket science. |

Yes, I know that, and I even said it on my original post. Your response is the same thing I've already been doing. My :conf: was to Ableton's reply, not yours. I was confused at their response because they said that in Session view you can type in exact values, something you can't do in Arrangement mode. Even Ableton said it's a "workaround." |

sorry man, it's just I can't honestly see what the problem, or for what work around you speak of unless you are DJing with live. I can't see the issue for producing, which is the impression you've given me... that's how I've always done it and it's never really bothered me tbh so I dunno, now I'm just not sure what you're getting at.
Do you mean setting each clip at a different tempo in session view? |
