Memory problems (pg. 5)

I have a pretty rock solid memory, but I still forget things sometimes (particularly short-term). Usually because of lack of sleep.
I think genetics has a LOT to do with it. I know people (like myself) who party their faces off all the time and still have a great memory, and I also know people who have never done any drugs and may have a drink or two every now and then, but can't remember .
EDIT: Also, cats. More cats. |

This thread is so good it seems a shame to bring it back on topic.
Generally I am renowned for having a superb memory, which I'm massively grateful for. I'd arguably class it as my best attribute. You can be intelligent without a good memory, but I think it's extremely difficult to be knowledgeable without one. Also, some of my friends have appalling memories, and have completely forgotten conversations or funny incidents and little anecdotes from only a year or two ago.
Having said that, I've realised recently I'm really poor at remembering faces, for some reason. In my memory I tend to conflate the appearance of people who looked vaguely familiar. Pretty odd that I should be so poor at that, when in general my memory is so good. |

As a matter of fact, so do I, at the expense of my short term memory. I can remember what/how/when stuff happened long ago with quite a few details, much to the amusement of the people involved. But I'll be damned if you ask me where I put my car keys :D
MAY THE FELINES RETURN! |

I'm excellent at remembering faces, but terrible with names.
I can see a person and say "Hey man, you were at that party 3 months ago wearing the blue t-shirt and khakis drinking rum n' coke... what was your name again?" |

| I've changed my university group last year and I still don't know what half the people that I see and talk to daily are named. |

Ditto. I'm one of those "super-recognizers" who can recognize people I passed by on the street and, if I happen to meet them at some point years later, I seem to be able to mentally place them in the context where I saw them the first time.
I am hopeless at remembering names, birthdays, my own phone number... numbers in general traumatize me.
Anyway, cats.

Don't shoot. <3 |

| memory is not just about encoding and retrieval. Developing your working memory is closely related to intelligence and the ability to manipulate abstract ideas in your noggin rather than just storage of knowledge. This is probably more worthwhile in terms of development. |
