Thanks I'd been meaning to get this

Reaper has something like it built-in :P

so you are doing automated automation which is pretty much compression or gating. lol. but i thought you didn't want to change the dynamics.

no one else to troll on this boring sunday evening?

telling you that you are mixing up concepts is not what most would call trolling. You want help but the issue at hand is your lack of knowledge on basic concepts. Take 1 hour of your life, and google what these things do because you clearly don't quite get it. LFO tool is automation which is compression which is a change in dynamics. All things you said you didn't. And all of a sudden you say bingo ? I think you really have no idea what any of these things do.

I'm actually doing you a favour head.

Yes, controlling volume is the same as controlling dynamics. Dynamic range is nothing more than the difference between the loudest and quietest part of a signal. All a compressor does is reduce the volume of the signal that goes above the threshold, thereby reducing the both the maximum volume and, consequently, the dynamic range. That's why it's called a compressor - it compresses the dynamic range.

And, yes, LFOTool is perfect for this and only $25. Another, more expensive option, is Vengeance MultiBand Sidechain (requires eLicenser dongle).

Use tremolo and sync it rate1/4 play with the knobs to emulate what you want, a ramp up in volume. Of course the width is set to zero so l and r play in sync. Voila. No need to get plugs.

^ nice dude thats a pretty sharp idea

for this purpose though it definitely needs a trigger not necessarily coinciding with a 4/4 kick, like if you wanted to do this with DNB for instance or just general sound design purposes

I ended up getting the results I was after by using a noise gate with a soft attack and release and offsetting the trigger a bit

How many hours did you spend achieving that effect in total? Counting from you got the idea, to when you posted this all the way up to whenn the sound you wanted came flowing through your speakers.

Edit: And I'm not asking only so I can say 'automation wouldve taken maxd 7-8 seconds', but it seemed like you have gotten an idea and managed to maintain interest in it for quite some time. Usually if I for some reason can't make something sound the way I want it I either drop the idea or sometimes even the whole project. I guess I have a short attenti-hey look a butterfly...

If I can't figure out how to make a computer do what I want it to do it kinda makes me go crazy. Like there is ALWAYS a way you just gotta persevere and figure it out. Like I wanted to play this game I have with my USB controller that has no support. After about 10 minutes of googling I found this program that lets you assign any input from an external source to any keystroke or trackpad movement on your computer. After about 20 minutes of programming it works perfectly. Now I can use that for any game I want to play ever. It's worth spending the time figuring it out once if it'll help you again and again later.
