i think the point about the new generation needing instant gratification is spot on, and imo that's one of the major reasons for this shift. cram as many big-name djs as you can into a festival lineup and although the musical knowledge and appreciation of the average attendee goes down, total attendance goes way up

Cramming many dj's into a lineup is nothing new. Look at any old rave flyer and it was the same way. Push more names and get everyone who likes someone on the lineup.

As for is trance dead? blah blah blah. Maybe it is in the "club scene" because it doesn't have that fist pump party atmosphere that club house and dubstep can bring but it's far from dead.

dubfail is already dying..talk about a fad.

trance isnt dead but imo its probably one of the slowest times in the last 20 yrs.

This storm has created utter confusion amongst the residents of the Trance community, the skills, tools and talent they had adhered over the years were completely overlooked and deemed insignificant, replaced with egotistical bullish marketing. This once great music genre attracted the elite producers of the World who produced forward thinking avant-garde music. This in return attracted Hollywood movie directors such as the Matrix whom used Trance music for its sound track. Consequently Progressive Trance was born; Sasha, Digweed and Way out West playing a big part in this (many people reading this wont remember these wonderful proud great days).

House, Electro and Dubstep are now King, and the storm have moved in that direction. The corporate are abandoning the sinking Trance ship and heading for where the money now lies dropping their now worthless Trance tag. ‘None genre’ seems to be the new trend now, along with Trouse as they abandon ship. So how does that make us true Trance musicians feel.

The ones that have dedicated our lives to this genre we feel so passionate about. Angry? Bitter? I think relived is the right word. We can now get on with the job in hand of making music void of Internet marketing games, and presence. We’ve lost a few good men on the way though, shame how they got totally overlooked.

- John “00″ Flemming on the state of trance moving from 2011 to 2012

This just about sums it up. Beautifully put by John "OO" Fleming.
I still love my trance thought it is so difficult to find good tracks now days. I completely detest this melodic electro garbage coming out of guys like Laidback Luke, Tiesto, Afrojack and the lot of morons. It has bastardized music to the core....

Not really, it's just the equivalent to Euro-dance back in the 90's. Sure, people might call it 'house', but it probably helps grow the overall scene. Without the distinction between what is 'house' and what 'dance music', it makes it easier for new fans to maybe explore a little bit when they wanna go out partying, much the same way many of us did as we grew up with 90's Euro.

Yep. Also samad I can't stand that type of crap either. "tech trance" for me will be GOOD beats with a decent melody, not just 'minimal techno' combined with trance. IMO that's just a bastardization of the two. :sadgreen:

I hear electro minimal is becoming the new thing (the kiddies who have tired from electro/dub and moved towards techy sounds but won't officially claim their change in interest until all their friends do lol). It's funny listening to them talk about it to me. "Yo I got this new tune. It's like electro minimal. Kind of like what you play" :tongue2

I am not sure why people (sometimes, including me) think that good music in EDM can only be made by the leading popular artists and no one else is capable of making good music. So what if the vast majority of "known" acts have deserted trance? It does not mean it is dead. It is just harder to find because the ones making good trance are folks we don't hear about much.

Here is an example of one such fella who is True To Trance and a proof that trance will never die!!!

perhaps but the article is speaking specifically about the decline of the "trance" genre. I don't doubt for a minute that the commercialization of dance music is only going to expose more people to Electronica of all forms and that can only be good. What they choose to do with that exposure is another thing.

There are still lots of great trance artists out there but yes just harder to find. The genre is teetering on an edge here and it really could go either way.

Trance will never be JUST a fad in our musical history. If anything it was a stepping stone, or maybe it paved way for other genres of music (i.e. Electro, Tech House, etc). In fact Trance probably evolved from our production capabilities at that time (including software & hardware used in making music). The technology has always been a deciding factor for musical production.

Point being...

Trance is dead. At least for those of you who have been around long enough to have experienced the great Trance dj's peak moments (*cough* the late 90
s, early 2000's).

I'm sure in the future Trance may rear it's ugly head again...BUT... for the time being.... ITS DEAD. GIVE IT UP!

And for any of you who still listen to Trance.... GET WITH THE TIMES YOU HIPPIE!

:tongue3

soo... I wrote that article on clubglow.com

and yeah - my avatar has a pic of me and pauly d. just a little something extra for the haters to hate :-P

i dont think i ever actually answered the question, "is trance dead?" I really just wanted to explore why the # of trance bookings in the US has fallen so hard.

yeah I work for Glow - and as a fan I wish we had more trance. Unfortunately - I wouldnt have a job if we started booking tons of trance guys. why? cause no one comes out.

is trance dead? no. not at all. is the scene dying? maybe. at least in DC. not our fault though. even in NY - trance is barely hanging by a thread i feel like.

how are you guys doing with it?

WittyHandle
Trance has been on the way out for a little while now as far as I can see. Now it's all about the "elctro-prog" from the likes of SHM and Avicii et al.

Oh ! I'm screwed!
