I absolutely can't stand how the journalism program here tries to push us to use all of these social networking sites, implying we won't be successful without them.

I see your point, but they're right. There's a hell of a lot more to social networking than Facebook.

A few weeks ago a tech company from the Washington Post came in to promote some social media platform they've been working on to sync Facebook, Twitter, etc. all into one feed. Or something like that.
Anyways, they asked a classroom of about 200 students who didn't have Facebook; I was the only one to raise my hand. They looked at me like I was crazy when I told them I didn't want to conform to it for the sake of following along with the rest of the crowd.
My opinion, it does more harm than good. It lends itself to result in lazy journalism and a lazy citizenry. |

| this I'm too cool to conform. Wait until you're out of school and you have a business. Social media is great for new leads. if my clients are on facebook so am I. If they are on twitter so am I. If theyre on tumblr so am I. If theyre on bbm so am I. Why??? because whenever the thought comes in there head about my product I want to be right there to be able to help them with it. I get a good portion of my leads through social media and if you can't see the power in that, you're doomed to ever be a b2c business owner. |

Yea...
It was one of those on-the-spot moments I wish I could have back. Definitely would have been a bit more strategic and convincing had I been given another chance to answer the question.
Like, "I don't use Facebook because my girlfriend thinks I'm going to find another girl on there and bang her" kind of answer. Maybe then I would have been taken seriously by some of the other students :o |
