Good Kick Sample for Reference, please?

Hey guys,
I've really been struggling to create the kicks I've been wanting, and since a good kick is absolutely necessary for the backbone of a song, I really want to get it right.
I can hear how the kicks I want sound in professional productions, but I want to hear what they sound like in my DAW. I've sampled some, but I want to hear what they sound like pre-mixdown and everything. Could anyone post some samples for download so I can see how they're supposed to sound.
Also, I acknowledge the fact that there is no "perfect" kick. What I'm looking for is those big kicks you get when the song drops. I haven't been able to get that "big" sound.
Thanks for any help, I really appreciate it. |

I think a drum synth is key for creating good kicks, use it to complement your samples, you get much more control that way. |

Thanks, I do understand that. I just wanted a reference because at times when I feel like my kick is coming out, it still wanes in power to those I hear on fully mixed tracks.
I know the dynamics of the track are important, I just wanted a reference, like I said originally.
No need to bring your arrogance around here. |

the idea of a big kick is perceptive. Most kicks that sound big really don't take as much space as you think. And a kick can only use as much space as you allow it. The only thing that i can't stand is when people have that badly compressed click that sounds awful. Happens way too often. It never sounds good anywhere. |

Getting a big kick is more about how it fits with the mix and not the overall kick drum sample, although that is pretty important to. In terms of a method, just keep the tail of the kick to where it's not lingering on when the baseline comes back in if you are ducking the kick/bass, or, if the tail of your kick drum is going to linger a little, make sure it interacts with the bassline nicely in terms of frequency, tone and loudness. Kicks do have some high end, so make sure those frequencies can cut through the mix as well by watching your high end.
Not really sure if I have a reference, too many tracks out there with good kicks so it's hard to pick. |
