I forgot that he played twice that year. lol. I'm not sure which review you were referring to, cause they were both weird. This is the first:

I punch myself in the shoulder, because my original plans for last weekend didn't include Footwork. What was I thinking?.. After friends had bailed on our excursion to see the artiste in Montreal, it occurred to me that making the trek back from Stereo and catching him for the double header was not only possible, but significantly better than the original idea! Four times in a span of a few months seems like a lot to catch a deejay, but I was still hungry for a proper set(s). The "Choose your own adventure" set he played the night before at Stereo was great, leaving me with a smile as I slept like a dino baby on my train ride home at 9:40 am Saturday. I was tired, but I'm a veteran, and was excited to experience Satoshi with others who hadn't seen him before.

We got to Footwork around 11:00. The vibe all night was harmonized happiness.. lots to appreciate with the celebration of the anniversary! The sparklers added a whole new level of awesomeness! :) These flashy moments happened pretty much all night at random times. Although it was not too packed in the venue, I don't recall too many occasions at Footwork where the dance floor was still fairly full up to closing time. It's nice to see that there's still a strong group of people who appreciate good music that you don't normally hear every weekend. New York's basic house underground scene has been doing it right for the longest time, but with events and support like these, we're not that far off the scale. ;)

There aren't that many contenders I can think of in Toronto who would be suitable to open for Satoshi. The first name that came to mind was Sean Miller, but given his lack of presence in the past while I couldn't picture it. Funnily enough, earlier that evening I had shared an elevator with Sean Miller who happened to coincidentally be in the same condo I went to visit. And then I thought.. JButz! This was an even better choice, given the fact he's opened for SAW recording artists before at Sonic, and who's sleazy sound would compliment the artiste really well. And there's also the fact that he played a killer opener during Lawler @ Circa earlier this year.. lol Anyway! Jeff's set was well thought out and programmed. Slower bpm sleaziness eventually elevating into more deep throat action. Rrrrrrr. I think Jeff should provide condoms every time he plays to reduce the chances of dance floor pregnancy; there were some pretty gross sights during the set lol.. some people forget where they are!

I think it's an honour that Footwork booked Satoshi Tomiie to play their anniversary weekend. As founder of SAW recordings, and an iconic
name in the New York house scene, it was more than suitable. Now.. it's taken me all week to analyze his masterpiece this time around. The Picasso of Prog did it again... but this time his creations took full control, and the comic book he drew on the dance floor inked itself... covering the pages with darkness, slowly enveloping all. Alas, it was 'The Nightmare on Brant Street', and the Dream Master stole our minds and distorted them. I'm still trying to put most of the puzzle pieces back in their rightful place! Damn him! :p His Footwork set was actually better than his prior one at Stereo. You'd think a deejay would play his best there, but a smaller, intimate venue makes much more sense for him. He played a lot less tech filler, and actually started his set with some dark bombs. This was unexpected; the artiste is not as predictable as I thought. Lots of deeper new york phat bass sounding tracks, spaced out at the right intervals, followed by the nightmare tunes! I recognized

Giuseppe Cennamo - El Gitano (2000 and One Hands in The Air Remix)

that he also played at Stereo the night before. I thought I had heard them all, but his last 30 minutes to an hour was unbelievable. His track selection is manifique! At one point he played this track that was a nonstop build up, and you'd think it was a cliched "dubfire" sounding build, but just when it'd drop, the melody would distort itself past levels of conscious comprehension!! :nervous: So unreal. Everyone's mouths were gaping at this point... marbles were definately long gone! These 5 hours of an adventure will haunt me for the rest of the year, and because of this, it's finally time to rank Satoshi as my #1 favourite. This is long overdue; I wouldn't travel the world for any other deejay and see them 4 times :D.

I don't know what more 2010 has in store, but musically, it's probably been one of my best years. Thank you Footwork!!

2nd time :nervous:

A Nightmare on Brant Street 2: Worm Holes

My night had started out at a Bingo hall (don't ask) and I had lost track of time, and was needed to start filming the sequel. Got to Footwork just after midnight.. it's close to midnight and something evil's lurking in the dark  It's been a while since I've been there and not a lot has changed in terms of clientele; Saturdays can still be as dodgy as Fridays. The major plot theme of the sequel is the idea of wormholes. Throughout the night while and before Satoshi would play, a worm hole would appear and take a specific person's dreams/thoughts and spew it out on the dance floor. There must have been some pretty messed up day dreams going on because it seemed to be couples night at Footwork as well as a senior citizen's recreation center. There were more than just the one older raver dude this time. More interesting characters include the kingpin leader, the female sasquatch - who later decided to shed her skin and was actually an amazon, and some lazer tag kids. :wtf: I suppose there might have been an overcast in actors, because the place was really packed up until after 4, which was great for Satoshi and the club!

The soundtrack to the movie was pretty epic for the most part. I completely missed J-butz set, but I'm confident he'll make it to the final cut of the cd release. Nitin was playing when I got there and I was a bit skeptical at first because he usually opens for a more techier sound. Don't get me wrong, every time I have heard Nitin play this year has been stellar, and he's easily become one of my local favourites, but I wasn't accustomed to hearing this darker side of him. As a result, he completely froze me and it was the best I've ever seen him. I think this deeper, darker, progressive, more house influenced sound suits him better. Not a dull moment and just blissful misty tunes until just before 2. Satoshi was running a bit late cause he was napping from fatigue, but wouldn't have minded if Nitin played until close; it was that good. He sounded like Satoshi pre 2008 up there and even dropped some raw underground New York house in there which Satoshi likes to do every so often. Bravo. :)

Another wormhole finally opened up and the samurai nightmare man appeared on the stage. I made my way to the front cause I was the main protagonist to the story and had a long way to battle as hopefully I would survive and make it to the next sequel. I was not as prepared as I thought because Satoshi Tomiie's format had changed. Instead of gradually enticing us and focusing on the whole club as one victim, he stole the dreams of individuals and transformed the place with them using the wormhole. He started off slow, progressive, melodic like I had hoped; masking his innocence with the airy sounds in his garden. Didn't take long for him to spew us out into his basement where he played some dirty, raw, New York beats. He usually waits farther into the movie to show his true colours and turn us inside out, but he turned the lights off to the basement and started dropping some dark prog; we had many casualties. Sounds of night bells and rattlesnakes were all we could make out. After an hour and a half we found a laundry chute and ended up in his ballroom where he surprised us with distorted haunting vocals and hints of percussion. Someone must have been thinking about Stereo at that point! :D Sporadically, the wormhole went out of control, and took us back to the various rooms of sound we had been in... we knew the climax would be near... and that's when the movie flopped. Every single time I've seen Satoshi (including the 4 this year), he's known to save the best for last. Instead of the most dark, twisted tunes for the ending of his movie, he loses his powers, and plays boring, lifeless tech house until almost the end. I felt really let down and was shocked, because it's what I look forward to the most. A group of people must have dreamt it!! Grrrr. I suppose he decided to tease us with it throughout the whole set, but I prefer the darkness delivered collectively in a massive cloud at the end. He played a bit funkier for the last 20 minutes, but his hold on the victims failed, and most people left as survivors.

His set had potential to be better than the first part, but an atrocious ending left too much of a bad taste. But other than that, and the fact that he only played just over 3 hours, the first 2 hours were superb. He redeemed himself a bit after the credits with his encore... a remix of Funkadelic - (Not Just) Knee Deep WTF!! LOL. What message was the dream demon trying to relay?? That we're all just mental patients who did actually just hallucinate it all? Hmm.. I actually look forward to part 3! Maybe Nitin will take over as the villain? ;)

Thanks Footwork for another great night!

This is very hard for me pick as I've had a lot of good nights at FW, and a lot of them just blurred to one giant happy memory of me loving FW in general. There's probably a lot of good DJs I've seen at FW, but these 3 events have most significant meaning for me. (yeah I'm breaking the rule so sue me, jon lol)

3. Max Graham, Mar 10
-Most significant for me because it was 2nd last event I went to before I went to Afghanistan. I remember going to this event with a bit of regret because literally, this might be the last time I might be stepping into FW.
This set was when Max Graham was making the transition back to trance, and a lot of people didn't enjoy the set, but I had a blast. One of my favourite trance sets I've heard live.

2. Danny Howells, Oct 08
-I'm just going to let my review of the night do the talking

Yeah, I write the best reviews :p

1. Lee Foss, Feb 11
-I think this event is one of those game changers that you can just see how it transformed the EDM scene in Toronto. Foss and nu disco was the breath of refreshing air that the Toronto scene really needed after years of bland tech house. Judging by popularity of Modern Love Affair and nu disco in general, I think this event can be pointed as one of key moments in FW's history.

There was a lot of hype for this event, so much that I went to Miami the week before to catch Foss at Electric Pickle, and he was everything I expected. Round 2 was even better, just because I got to share it with friends. And Toronto EDM scene was never the same.

Same. Except for lee foss, never made it.

I was FLOORED by that MG set and seeing Howells slowly kill the place.
flavor
So many.... TOO many to pick from!

would have to be:

Speedy J in Sept 2009

I <3 Footwork!
