I recently watched this set of documentaries where this dude from Norway takes the Social Sciences (at least, as they are taught in Norway) to task on a variety of issues.

EP 1 - The Gender Equality Paradox
EP 2 - The Parental Effect
EP 3 - Gay/Straight
EP 4 - Violence
EP 5 - Sex Drive
EP 6 - Race
EP 7 - Nature vs Nurture

The password for every video is 'hjernevask' and each video clocks in at just under 40 minutes long.

What really stands out at me the most is watching the Social "Scientists" use the same types of strategies, arguments and challenges against the scientific data as creationists use when arguing against evolution.

Great list ;) Jim and Brian are great.

Oh, Brian is also working on another documentary 'Wonders of Life' :D .... I think he finished a couple of months ago, actually.

They are not just great, they are awesome! :D Not just on the science content (which i know, is severly dumb down so that people like me who are interested in science, but dont really know anything about it, can understand whats going on) but on inspiration as well. I always say that if i had access to quality science programming that i do now when i was a kid, i would have probably picked a different career choice. Alas, i was stuck in a school system where biology, chemistry and physics were just some extra maths you had to do to advance a grade, nobody bothered to make them interesting. In fact every single teacher i had in these subjects acted like it was their lives work to steer people away from ever enjoying any of these subjects :(

And i know about Wonders of Life, Brian is one of the people i actually take follow on fb/tw and it seems like every other day hes filming in some exotic location or another :D I also subscribe to his "Infinite Monkey Cage" podcast and find it quite enjoyable and entertaining

Even the word "Social science" suggests an oxymoron

How so?

Okay, perhaps its not exactly an oxymoron. I just don't think you should judge real science by everything that lays claim to the title.

"Social" is the strangest word in the English language, in that it is an adjective which negates the meaning of whatever noun it is attached to. social science, social justice, social security, social worker.....

Wiki
"Science is a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe."

I think "social research" is a better term.

To a large extent, you can do that with societies. Social Psychology is full of examples of how you can even predict what most people will do in a given situation, and the information is systematised in a way that can make these predictions more reliable. One of the founding works in sociology could help researchers predict what fraction of the population was more likely to commit suicide (something we tend to think as a highly personal action), and sociolinguists are quick to point out you can draw a correlation on how a person speaks to random things about their identity, for example.

(Un)fortunately, you can't test people the same way you test atoms, but an able researcher is able to do some really awesome stuff every now and then.

I should add a caveat though before I go on defending social science any further: There IS a more extreme form of social science that sees natural science as a social programme, and draws some really faulty conclusions from that. If one of those researchers in Spam's videos really attack anything that is far from their own field of research, they're probably a bit irresponsible to begin with - and that's not exactly the norm.
