I bought one for my sibling last christmas and was blown away at how well it fills a room. If you don't mind dropping the money I haven't heard anything that packs more of a punch that a Bose into a docking station. Total overkill for an alarm clock type thing but so handy for when you're away from home like feelgood is saying... Special K If you are willing to drop money on a Bose system then I would consider something from B + W (pretty much the same pricepoint).
