"Back 2 Back" - Most overrated gimmick in Trance today?

I've really been thinking about this and when I think of Back 2 Back, I imagine what goes on in a DJ Booth to go something like this:

DJ A: "HA! I bet you don't know what i have coming up next! I'm REALLY going to trick you this time!"
DJ B: "Ohh...i bet I do!"
DJ A: "OK then! Here it is!"
DJ B: "OH WOW! You tricked me! I've never had to mix in and out of this track before! I've never heard this track by this Top 10 international trance DJ nor the remix of this track done by a Top 20 international trance DJ. I've never seen this on the promo list nor have I had it emailed to me. Shucks!"
DJ A: "HA..TAKE THAT!"
DJ B remains speechless and just goes to the back of the DJ booth and cries because he's out of options. But that's OK. He has a random girl hanging out back there that wants to sing vocals on his next production so he's just going to take her back to his hotel room afterwards and make her "earn" her spot on the track.

And so the party continues...

So...what does everyone think? I think it's quite insulting when DJs say they are doing "Back 2 Back" when in fact, they should just say they are playing together. I don't buy the gimmick and I laugh at those who go, "OMG!!! DJ A is doing a B2B with DJ B!!!"

I just find it to be a futile attempt at marketing to fans.

I was going to say Gareth Emery, but back to back comes close.

There are a select few DJ combos who work really well B2B, arguably better than on their own. Most of the time, it's a recipe for ty flow and conflicting styles.

In my experience going one and one or two and two with another dj is a in fail. Never seen it work out in a live situation.

Five words:

Davide Squillace and Matthias Tanzmann
Johan (DJ Irish)
Sasha & Digweed used to be pretty good at that from what I remember

I actually find that when playing similar styles, and the other guy isn't a complete chump, DJing back to back can be fantastic. You get twice as much time to think about what the right track to play is, and what direction to go. As long as you are communicating and on the same wavelength (or one person takes the lead), there can be some good synergies

Most of the time though, certainly at trance nights, they are just thrown together without thought about styles, and either DJ is crap anyway.

Saw Jochen Miller and Rank 1 B2B and it was great.

Also Hernan Catteneo is great when he has a similar prog dj play with him

Ben klock and Marcel Dettmann, Joy Orbison and Jackmaster, they're doing a B2B tour, and Chris Liebing with Speedy J when doing their "Collabs" thing, they're spinning for 5+ hours, some of that is great B2B.

It was good when Mark EG & M-Zone did it around 1997-2000 but most of the setrips up have the MCs on so there's not much point me posting one.

Can relate to this. From my own experience it can be great fun for the DJs but I'm not entirely convinced it's always for the benefit of the crowd.

There are some notable exception as mentioned in this thread (Liebing & Speedy J etc) but in most cases I believe B2B to be detrimental to the dance floor experience

If the two djs spin a similar style and respect eachother, its a recipe for a great night both in the booth and on the dance floor. Personally when i back 2 back with another dj we bring our A game and its fun to show off new tracks/skill.

It all depends on the compatibility of the two djs. I've done back 2 backs with djs who have big egos and it doesn't work. You gotta work together as a team, progressing the flow, playing tracks that go along with the other dj's track selection as well.
