Considering I never asked what panning was...yeah.

I have no idea what you're getting at. Should I have been harder on you because you didn't ask what panning was or should I be applauding the fact that you have a basic comprehension of the term and understand its usage?

Also, could someone cue me in to what M/S panning is? and what all this talk of dB's and ratios means?

In particular using m/s eq. you want to make room for the lead but not loose the highs of the percussion, bamm, on the sides. And now that there are so many plugins that allow this, it is magic.

Please tell me everything there is to know about this lovely subject right now.

in under 20 words ?

panning is essentially trying to create an atmosphere of sexyness and non creapyness with two sexy ladies for a marathon threesome. And one of them is your sister.

What would you recommend the cutoff frequency be at for where the stereo comes in?

What are peoples favorite tools for panning?

My ears, my thumbs and forefingers, and pan knobs.

If you're talking autopan effects, I usually just use good old pan automation, but if I want something more advanced, I like PanMan, Uhbik T, or CamelSpace.

What are some unique panning patterns people have found?

I don't think many people have panning preferences. I'm not even sure what that means. And what do you mean by panning patterns? Presets?

Panning is something that is done by using your ears. A good general rule of thumb is to pan sounds with overlapping frequencies to opposite sides to keep them from clashing. How much panning depends on everything else that is going on in the mix and what your ears tell you. Try to keep an overall +/- balance when panning to keep your mix centered overall. Good panning meters can help.

No problem. That one is for Pro Tools, so I was afraid that it might be too advanced for some people. :)

So, where is your helpful response?

You might not like the responses I provided, but they're helpful and I did suggest some autopanners. Encouraging the OP, who is obviously a complete newb, to try to find some sort of premade patterns for panning is not helpful. Next to volume, panning is the most basic and easiest concept to grasp in mixing. Most of the advanced guys around here don't have much tolerance for people who won't take 20 minutes to learn the most basic concepts for themselves, and expect to be spoon-fed the answer or some sort of preset pattern to toy with. That doesn't work with panning because, as I made clear in my post above, it's something that you do with your ears, whether it's for creative or technical reasons, because it's completely dependent on the material and the context.
