Trance compilations?

I'm looking for some good trance compilations, classic trance albums that would contain many gems under one album.
I've recently been listening to the newest tracks and it was just too hard to find any tracks that could be called as possible "future classics"... So I wanted to start listening to more classic trance
But I haven't yet found a compilation that contains all/many of the greatest, biggest classics.
Any recommendations? |

What do you mean by this? Big old hits from the late 90es/early 2000s era or puristic classic trance from the early days, which are the DNA of trance, that were hits or not necessarily hits?
Anyhow, for the earlier stuff, I think this is pretty good:
http://www.discogs.com/Various-The-.../release/429727
The earliest trancemaster series give nice insight too: http://www.discogs.com/Various-Tran...ase/54719?ev=rr
or another series: : http://www.discogs.com/Various-The-...II/master/30826
Also, individual label compilations from labels like: Eye Q Records, MFS, Platipus, Rising High, Harthouse, R&S, etc.
And the ones Euforix recommended, for sure. |

Start with these. |
Add Paul Oakenfold - Tranceport to this list. |

Thanks for those, I've listened some of those already... Euforix always seems to have something up his sleeve. |

Are you looking for a well constructed mix? Or just a compilation of songs? The answer will shed more light into what we can recommend. I would say if you are looking for the latter, I would definitely look into the behind the eye compilations on what stuff eye q records was putting out. If you are looking for latter day trance compilations there used to be this series of compilations called Heaven Deep Trance Essentials that always had quality songs on most of their releases.
If you want well constructed mixes the following are essential in my opinion: X-Mix 1 The MFS Trip, Northern Exposure 1 and 2, and the GOA Mix by Oakenfold. |

| BTW does anyone else notice just how crazy you sound to a non electronic music listener when you try and explain the difference between progressive trance and progressive house? or even trance and progressive house? The looks on peoples faces are priceless. |

Isn't the difference just the tempo? |

if by tempo you mean bpm here is an example of how it doesnt work:
Dance 2 trance we came in peace is 120bpm
Spooky Little bullet high velocity mix is 126bpm.
You cant get more trance than we came in peace and spooky is just about the definition of progressive house. Lets not even get into Sashas releases or Bedrocks releases which are all just about in the 130s. |

Oh crap, forgot about We Came In Peace.
edit: found this from a quick search

imo it has a lot to do with the bassline...
prog house seems to be more repeditive, not to melodic, more instruments, and levels, deeper basslines for the most part, more loops, a lot of the time have big build ups
prog trance seems to be more melodic, not as "rolly," fluffier, just different sounding

They were the best compilations there ever were (1993-1999). My first trance compilation ever was Trancemaster 8... that Raver's Nature tune still gets me moving every single time I hear it. And the one I have in my avatar (Trancemaster 6, 1000 limited 12" edition - I'm a proud owner) |
Yeah, number 8 was a really good one. The tracks of Traumatic, The Jeyenne II I thought were awesome, most of the others I already had or knew, I bought this version a bit later. I already had the album of God's Groove for years, such a masterpiece.
My first one was Trancemaster 7, Loops & Things and Acid Folk were huge hits in the clubs over here back then. Quench - Dreams was a masterpiece too but never got that popular unfortunatly.

Future Trance-compilations never were about trance music in it's purest form but they were fun compilations what so ever. They included good eurodance and HandsUp tunes, the only downside was that they always were and still are aimed for german listeners and the tracks are straight from normal german clubs and bars.

Indeed, but because of the huge amount of tracks there were some nice suprises among them. Also the versions mostly were too short.
A fun compilation is a very good description. I used to get many cd's in Germany, they even had a so called "Sampler chart" with like 50 different compilation series. D.Trance and More Than Miles were similar compilations. The first a bit harder and the second a bit softer.
One of my first trance compilations was Octan
http://www.discogs.com/Various-Octa.../release/139251
Octan 3 had Gyfu - Throwing Shades on it. I can't believe it's still not on Youtube, I love it, only found it here online: http://www.wat.tv/audio/gyfu-feat-p...x1t_2fi0v_.html

There are some very good Belgian compilations like the Serious Beats series or Dance Opera which also was a label. About every big club in Belgium had it's own compilation series (La Rocca, Illusion etc.)
