Savings Presets from a JP80x0 to Logic 916

Hi,

I'm probably doing this a long winded way, but I've been trying to work this out for 2 days and not had much luck.

I picked up a JP8000 for cheap last year and never really touched it till I started messing around with it this week. I've gone through the manual which tries to explain how to hook up to a sequencer (even though the manuals 15+ years old). But I'm struggling to work out how to save my own presets to Logic via dumping to a midi file.

My JP8000 is hooked up to my RME 400 via the midi cables (in to out / out to in) and the audio likewise. Within Logic, I've got an External Midi track and I have setup the JP8000 with the following settings:

Local Switch = On
Midi Sync = On
Tx/Rx Edit SW = On
RX Exclusive On
Tx/Rx ProgChang SW - Bank SEL + PC

Device ID = 17

Within Logic, I've setup a multi-instrument item within the environment and configured that to the correct midi ports on the RME. So far so good, I can play midi notes to the JP8000 from logic, tweak various jp8000 knobs via logic (74 etc) all working great, latch works great etc. I can also dump a .mid bank (like Mystery Islands) or the Standalone 7Skies demo bank from his website and all good, presets appear on the JP8000. So it seems like it works.

The problem seems to be when I go to the Jp8000's "dump user patches all" option and I hit record on Logic on the midi track, once the JP8000 starts transmitting, it creates a midi region within the midi channel setup and under events in Logic, the System Exclusive screen shows loads of action. But when it finishes, the midi region doesn't look like the banks I have with x's across it. Instead, it looks like it's showing automation lines if that makes sense.

So If I factory reset the JP8000 and try and reload that bank I've saved into Logic back to the JP8000 in the same manor as I did with the purchased banks, the JP8000 still retains the factory presets.

Any ideas? And sorry if I rambled on a bit.

Cheers,
Simon

Is this something you've done with other instruments? Why not just, oh I don't know, store the patches on the JP8000. :p

Thee only other instrument I have is the Virus TI but that just works via the normal way.

Is just that I want to back up my presets.

Can't help directly with a JP as I don't own one but do you have any sysex filters enabled?

Personally though, i would use Sysex Librarian by Snoise - it's way less fiddly and you can easily manage any presets. It also integrates in other programs such as logic. Honestly, I wouldn't waste any mroe time trying to figure it out in logic unless it's a sysex filter issue - logic can be a little bit annoying when it comes to dumps.

Funny enough, I've just tried Sysex Library - I can dump files from Sysex Library to the JP but when I try to "record many" and send a dump from the JP8000, I get nothing come back.

Although if I run the MIDI Monitor app that they have on their website, I see loads of messages coming through.

Really weird.

I'm waiting for a USB/Midi cable to arrive so I can bypass the RME FF400 incase that is the issue (can't see how it could be) and try it with an old laptop with Windows XP.

The FF400 should pass midi perfectly - there were incredibly rare cases of one of the midi ports not working correctly (firewire data corrupting the midi data flow but it was fixed in a update).

Couple of things then to try Simon:

1, What firmware and software are you running for the FF400? Update them both using the links on the RME site. Then try to do it again.
2, Swap out your midi cables for each other - I've seen very weird midi issues caused by faulty cables.
3, Use midi-ox to receive a dump and see what happens.

In the back on my grey matter, I vaguely remember something about that weird looking midi regions in Logic - I think they are GM library files, not sysex (.syx), which if I'm right is why you're having problems using the data.

So knowing that, I think that's why you're having problems saving your presets; they are not like individual files, rather a GM library dump.

Here you go....this explains how to do the user preset backup but I think you need the winjplib.exe....
