Is "EDM" is a bad word now

I hate using or even hearing the term "EDM". I've began to associate it with something really negative usually ty music with a tier crowd that follows.
When I hear the term, it always comes up in some sort of negative discussion about how bad EDM has become.
I find it very similar to the term "Rave". Promoters try and stay away from the term "rave" as it is usually associated with stupid kids, horrible music and something illegal.
I have no clue why I'm posting this but I guess after seeing (mostly hearing) a bunch of bull , I guess I'm getting tired of the "EDM scene". |

It happens every time something that has a particular following, turns mainstream.
I wouldn't think too much into it. I'm sure this "EDM" craze won't last for more than another year or two with the exact same DJ's coming in and out. People get bored of that real quick. Then the scene will go back underground and we can all have our little dive parties back.
The thing about America is, once something goes mainstream, people absolutely eat it alive. To the point, that they kill it. It's inevitable, and it will happen. I'd honestly give it two years max before the mainstream crowd moves on to the next fad. |

Yeah, remember when rock n roll came and went... what an insane two years.
Oh, and the 1.5 years of hip hop... isn't it nice that no one listens to that anymore.

| I don't like ty music either. However, there is a dancing component to it, which can be a little addicting. It can probably last for a few more years. |

First, some EDM fans are more concerned with the fact that it is now popular, and therefor think it sucks. ("sellout" comes to mind)
Second, as people get older, they begin to think that everything was better "back in the day." It's why there are 80s stations and such...
I have tried to stop caring so damn much and just enjoying what sounds good to me. |

Interesting question.
I remember when I first joined these boards, there was some debate about the term in MD. It would pop up in various threads, if I recall correctly, so I wouldn't know how to find one now. There was talk of the origin of the term, it's connotation vs denotation, and the validity thereof. Some old schoolers seemed to hate the term, but most people openly embraced it as a catch-all term for the music they loved.
I started using the term back then to describe my taste in music, and I probably did so as a snobbish sort of thing. The connotation has definitely shifted, as 'EDM' used to be a pretty democratic term whereas now it seems to be used most of the time in reference to pop-dance music. It feels more like: "That SHM, Dirty South, Deadmau5 stuff, and even some of that Armin van Buuren and Tiesto music" than "Electronic Dance Music".
I flinch whenever I hear it now. |

Exactly my point.
Because the music scene is blowing up, and going through changes, those of us who have been around for awhile fall too easily into the trap of thinking we are above others and that those peoples taste sucks and the music is crap...
Sure a bunch of scenesters have taken over the genre, but I encourage you all to stay open minded and no let your age and elitism get to you.
SHM, Armin, and D5 can't really be compared in one sentence either. :D Just giving you a hard time, I know what you mean....
EDM is the new "techno" |

I'm guilty of falling into that trap. :whip: :whip: :whip: :whip:
Completely agree with you that EDM is the new TECHNO. |

This. I'll also take an educated conversation about EDM rather than a conversation about "techno." Anybody recall the late 90's when anything from Europe was "techno" here in the States?
I think the problem is that people use it without a clue of what all it encompasses. EDM was the catchall term for anything that was produced for consumption in the "underground electronic market" that had a dance beat. It encompasses everything from Trip Hop and Downtempo to Breaks, Techno, House, Progressive House, Trance, Hi-NRG, Hard Dance, Jumpstyle, Drum & Bass and so on.
I never cringe when Cox, Tong, AvB, Markus, Danhy T, Hawtin, or so on use it. I do when uneducated people do... and those are the people who always kill things in any media market. |
