Using an I-pad

Ok, I accept it may be seen as a gimic by some, but I'm really keen on using the I-pad as part of my set up (2 x CDJ's / 2 x 1210's / Pioneer 3000)
Anybody on here use it at the moment or got any turorials etc in terms of spinning tunes?
I also had a look at the Korg app for producing and it appears to be getting some good feedback! |

i would not use it live. At home sure. |

People use TouchOSC with Ableton live a lot for live set ups.
Also, why are you making it so hard? It's called an iPad. No hyphens lol. |

I still don't think a touchscreen is a good interface for performance. You don't get any 'feedback' and the controls often require a lot of precision, so you have to stare at the screen to make sure you're moving the right thing in the right way... it sucks the life out of your performance, in the same way that a laptop screen placed between the DJ and the crowd does.
So for buttons, keys, faders and especially knobs - I try to steer clear.
Where it will excel is for the more tailored control interfaces... e.g. 'Kaoss-like', where precision isn't paramount but it's more about a particular kind of gesture. I've seen demos of interfaces where moving 1 finger up/down in a zone controls low EQ, 2 fingers for mid, 3 for high or 4 for volume. But very few developers seem to be doing this and everything seems to be an emulator for some kind of hardware.
But that said, a screen which doesn't need a keyboard is obviously much more compact than a full size laptop so is quite convenient in a booth.
The precision problem also goes away when you take it out of the direct signal path - i.e. not directly changing the sound with your touch movements. I've been considering using a touchscreen for a 'digital CD wallet': a panel of artworks that can be scrolled, flicked through and selected with swipe gestures... interfacing that with something like Traktor isn't straightforward, but I'm working on it :-) |

for live use, it just isn't stable enough. And it is too temperamental introducing too much room for error. I think you could use them as displays, or a tool to track your timing or keep track of your overall form, i think it can be useful to have a live stream for people for all your shows. But as a controller, i mean even with hardware, will go wrong. The ipad is greeat but for live use.... |

I've been using an iPad in my live setup for a couple of years now and I've had no stability/latency issues at all. It's now an key component in my current setup, I utilise both TouchOSC and Touchable.
Directed at the original post - I get the impression you're trying to integrate it for the sake of integrating it, if you have no need for it, don't bother using it. |

Yeah, probably. I was just curious what (if any) benefits there were for future reference.
On another point, does anyone have any suggestions on a download store that works well with the iPad?
Beatport is pretty poor. |

iTunes is all you get. The rest just let you add things to your cart. |

Zabiela used the iPad effectively when I saw him in March, although he can do wonders with just about any gear.
Not sure what app he was using though and it was for effects, not to actually play the tracks. |

Yea I've seen this as well. I don't see any reason why one wouldn't use any type of gear they want to create music..or effects in this case. |
