Hey Stu

You might want to have a look at these threads in the PF:

Long story short, go intel.

Get the 3 or 5 series, and get the 120gb models or upwards (the 120+ models actually perform faster and the cost difference is not that much until you start getting in to really large sizes).

Reliability is the best from intel (on a par with HDD's) and the performance is among the best and with the lastest 5 series offerings, they are actually the fastest for random access.

Oh, and don't let anyone feed you a line about drives being expensive due to the floods - it never really affected real supplier prices that much and it was over months ago.

You don't think a 60GB would be enough? The prices here in AU will be pretty different (in a bad way) from over there in the States. What I'm looking at for Intel is:

3 series 60GB = AU$97
3 series 120GB = AU$149
5 series 60GB = AU$109
5 series 120GB = AU$201

I don't really feel like dropping a couple of hundred bucks on it... I guess I will if I have to.

Anytime mate!

tbh, if you're a bit strapped then just go for the 320 120gb version - it's fast and reliable and worth the extra $50 for double the size and the extra speed that model has. I just woulnd't buy a 60gb drive as that can fill up pretty quick with the size of programs these days and you never want a drive anywhere close to capacity.

The difference in performance between the 520 and 320 is really not that much (especially when you see the staggering performance upgrade from a normal HDD to any decent SSD).

Go with the 320 and you'll be set.

Niiiiiiiiiiice!

Do a fresh install though - don't clone your existing drive, always a nice time to do spring cleaning :)

i have 18 SSDs being used at the moment. NO failures so far. Use the intel's for the OS and the audio drive with projects and what not. The other drives are for data that gets read mostly. They are vertex 3s. I do back up my working stuff every 4 hours. And keep 2 of each on hand in case one does fail. I'have had 12 of of them for almost a year ? I have a power conditioner , and they are in a mac pro. I guess i've tried to keep anything that could up out of the equation but i still operate under the assumption that it will fail today.

6 in each mac pro
and 6 using Gdrive enclosures , the thunderbolt ones but i replaced the HDD with SSDs.

I was going to suggest Umart is pretty much 'down the road' for computer bits and they're very dependable as a company.

Yeah, that's actually where I got it from :p Normally, I buy from MSY in Morningside, because they're about a stone's throw away... They've become useless though, and won't even answer their phones before midday, so I can't even see if they have anything in stock. them, they don't want my business

How is it working for you, Stubert? I actually ordered the exact same SSD a couple days ago.
