Oh don't get me wrong, I completely agree. I was just being an ass for the sake of being an ass.

Timely thread.

I'm getting more and more sick of the endless steam of talentless hacks calling themselves DJ's, when all they are is marketing fluff, logo design all presented in a fistpumping bag of douche, there to "entertain" the great unwashed (and musically uneducated).

I say timely, as I have been lucky enough to catch Carl Cox twice in the last two weeks - once here in LA and the previous week in Vegas - and it reminded me how bad the popularist scene and pretenders really are.

Cox is DJ pure talent, in it's most raw and moving form.

Vegas he played for 5 hours (before I left) and had the entire place jacking - I mean people dancing on tables until I left at 9am - that sort of enthusiasm for the music he was playing. Most of the time he worked decks (and not for the sake of it), every second of it, he was either dancing himself or working the kit. The music was a mix of techno, tech-house, prog and deep house, with constant intricacies and layers of other tracks.

LA he played for three hours, kept it rocking the whole time, even though the crowd wasn't quite as up for it (few too many randoms), but the last 20 minutes was just constructed out of him messing with FX - delays looped, the decks not playing and he whipped up a kind of tech house wall of sound as his finale.

No pretentious bull, no bravado, no douchebag entourage, just music, talent, performance and dancing.

Now granted, there are very few people who can do what he does, but he is EXACT opposite of all those hacks that call themselves DJ's. ing nice guy too, and humble.

I was on a boat party CC played on a few weeks ago. While mate of mine was talking to the promoter, Carl wandered over then turned to my mate and said "Hi, I don't think we've met, I'm Carl".

Like there was anyone on that boat who didn't know who he is!

As Alfi said, I hate it when noobs do it but it was just the finale. He's already played for 45 mins over the closing time of the club and the place just had the hardcore left who frankly didn't have much more left in them. It was just a showpiece to close the set down, and it worked.

I'd have been pretty ed off if someone (including Cox) did that mid set.

I don't see the point of building up something into nothing, but those umlimited crescendos are almost parodies of themselves
