the problem i have with your club is that when i go, i stand in the middle trying to hear lazer sounds being panned side to side. Every time this happens, i smoke a little crack. I even bring my lucky pipe. It has a nice jasmine bouquet that makes it go down smooth. Thats what i do. Now i waited 5 ing hours, not once did i get to smoke anything. Which makes me think your system is dual mono and you ed me. I want half of my money back.

I take it Stereo agrees with this article? :)

I sort of agree. I wouldn't say all djs but there is something unique to the dance scene where you can be ing brutal and get away with it. For example, there is this dj that sometimes plays at Circus, now i happened to be there 2 times and this was a few months apart and i go maybe 3 times a year , the guy played the exact same ing set. I mean the same ing tracks in the same order. And people loved it. The problem is that the inherent skill is just not noticeable by most. NOt to mention you get enough hyped people with the right drugs in the same room and it was the best night ever regardless if there was a dj at all.
But i dont think djs are any worse, i would say that the opportunity to be ty and still thrive is about the same. In fact you could trainwreck way back and nobody would care or notice. I think that the mystery has been pretty much unraveled and djs havenčt really added anything. With the technology that exists, i mean you would expect each dj to have their own personal edits of tracks, something that would make them unique. But you dont see it. You see the same guys playing the same tracks in a different order. Some have better hair cuts.
The funny thing, I've noticed at least is when you leave a concert, everyone is talking about how awesome the band was or how ty they were. You seem to get more fans out. Nobody is there to just get high or drink. For EDM, i won't it doesn't happen but you tend to get the feeling that people are there for themselves first and the dj well usually if they even care , it is because they recognize the name so they are excited because if it is a big name, well it must be big party. What ends up happening is that the dj is just a guy providing the underscore for their drug fuelled debauchery.
I find it rather rare that you witness something that you can say to yourself, that was something unique that will never be heard again. Part of the problem is the actual industry. Producers still use beatport to sell their music, which is aimed towards djs, a very very small percentage of the population. As a result, you have people that are forced to dj because they can't make money just doing what they like. And since you need some sort of production credit to be a headlining dj, well they hire the producers which i think would be better if they spent the time to develop something they could present live but most just dont' take the time. And some people are just not performers.
I mean the fact that Aoki can charge what he charges. I mean what a farce. But i mean there are so many things like that. Those jersey s, all those reality tv shows ... Sheryl at Wanda's

You can party with the kiddies at Aoki or go see DJ's with a long-standing fan base like these die-hards.

ahahahah
one thing ive noticed in montreal is that the crowd tends to be rather old. The problem with old people is that they lack that sort of excitement you seem to find with the yougins, There tends to be less sketch heads, perhaps more glowsticks and bad dancing but overall you get a less sketchy more energetic less depressing sort of ambiance. I mean im 31, and honestly, I feel young at these things. And that is kinda ed. And the old people scare the young people away and the old people will eventually stop showing up. It is not quite that way for the gay scene but for afterhours, well this is my experience.
I once helped an owner who ran this club and it was just dying. The first thing i noticed was that his crowd was too old. His crowd wasnt gay, they were just ravers that never grew up. Romantic and but he was losing money. I told him that he needs to stop playing music the old people like and realize that unlike a bar crowd, the afterhour crowd has a shelf life. And if you dont have young people, your club is going to slowly die because unlike a bar or club, old people lose interest way more than drinking. And although this might sound judgemental, someone that is 35 going to afterhours say every 2 weeks doing hard drugs, i think there is usually something sad about the whole thing. And the overall vibe tends to reflect that. You get more junkies, losers , people that are just not inspiring and that scares the sort of people you want away.
ANyways, long story short, he went from 100 to 1000 in a month. I mean it wasn't that simple. The task in shifting your target audience is a delicate thing. But the age and overall excitement that people that age bring tend to create a fun atmosphere that people come back for. We were careful tho to make sure that the young people coming in where not those types of washed up drug addled people that come and sit on the chairs and act homeless. And it wasnt just more people, it was more fun , less jaded people. Students, people that just wanted to have a good time. Not the type you see where you have a feeling this is all they have to look forward to.

I have to agree with that. There's tons of local DJs that are totally clueless of what they are doing and people just eat it up.
But let's be honest, 90% of local DJs are not professionals. Meaning not only they don't all take this seriously, but most of them have a full time job.
They play once a month, are not well paid, put only a few hours a week into it (maybe even less). It's more an hobby, or an extension of their partying years, than a job. That's why most don't last more than a few years.
But I have seen Djs like Dubfire and Warren do horrible technical sets, unworthy of professionals that play so often and are well paid to do so. People really don't give a .
You get the crowd you deserve. If you are good, you will bring in audiophiles. If you're not, you will get the clueless. At the end of the road, it's really about your personal road and what you want to get out of it.
As far as the article goes, of course something has been lost in the art of DJing. But even if you write about it and remember the good old days, you just can stop evolution (or devolution)

promoters should demand more. There are literally hundreds of people wanting to take their place. I mean when i used to dj, if you were new, you didn't get paid period. If you had a residency , you got 250$, if you opened for a headliner , maximum was 500$. Now think about the costs back then. I mean you were spending 300$ a week on vinyl. I've heard obvious rips that were at 128 which makes you wonder, really, you can't ing pay 2$. I mean that sort of hackery , i only noticed once or twice but man, it is sad.
And the worst part is that non of them really do much promoting at all. I mean you would think, ok i'm playing this place, I would go on all the message boards at the very least, plugging my thing, with a link to my site with music that would make people interested. Half the sites listed lead to nothing or maybe a Facebook page with nothing. It blows my mind how some djs are rather lazy. But it seems ego has not changed a bit. Funny how that works.
I was at this club can't remember, the guy played 5 tracks twice in the span of 4 hours i mean really ? This is one of those old montreal lets charge 12 $ a drink and say our place is posh. Worse tho, The guy played Michael jackson Human Nature. At 2:30 am. Seriously, he went from like dr dre classic where everyone was digging then played a ing ballad. It was just brutal. And the club was full. I actually went to the booth and flipped him the finger when i left i was that appalled. I mean what the is going thru his mind. Alright, the crowd is primed, its 2:30, everyone is drunk waiting for a tune everyone can get down to , time for my ing secret dance floor destroyer , a ing michael jackson ballad. I mean ballads , you play at highschool dances so boys can rub up against girls and feel their boobies. I would of fired the guy that night. I mean what sort of sick , out of all the michael jackson songs to chose when people are all dancing, you chose human nature. Blows my mind.

I remember when Angel dropped MJ's "Remember the Time" at 5 am to a packed house at the Stereo (4th?) anniversary party. Like that's what people want to hear when their pills are kicking in. Good call brah.
He also dropped Wayne Newton's Danke Schoen at least 4 times that night. No joke. I lol'd hard each time.
