I think they already make enough with premium services.

It would have it's pros and cons. Soundcloud is a niche product. So only the niche of users they serve would buy. So it would be interesting mostly to artists whom share a similar demegraphic in their fanbase as soundcloud does. On the other hand it would empower the artist to market their music straight to the consumer instead of via a label. All in all it could be interesting for Soundcloud but I don't think they need it or will actually benefit from it considering their core business and users.

they would need an insane amount of time invested in quality control to prevent selling uncleared samples :o

Not really. For every 1 person on a premium account there will be hundreds of freeloaders uploading rubbish tracks taking up bandwidth the premium users pay for.

I've had it on good authority they're running at a loss to gather content, which is really the hard part.

They are by definition still a startup. They don't have to make money yet,
raising enough funds to expand the platform and increase their value.
They raised about $50 Million at the beginning of this year.
The real value is in its users and the amount of them.

Look at twitter, they just started rolling out features to monetize their service,
while it's been around since 2006.

Don't forget about Instagram either. Within 2 years from starting they were worth $1 Billion to facebook.
You have to see that $1 Billion in perspective to other acquisitions made lately to understand how much that actually is.

Insane amounts of money, and don't look surprised when the next .com bubble blows up in our face rather sooner than later.

I know.

I was just illustrating the point that they're not making money at this point.

I think it would be kinda cool to see it as also a store, but for some reason I think it would kind of diminish the value soundcloud has to fans, musicians and the entire cultures surrounding different genres and soundclouds use. It would just become another online music retailer.

Probably going to have advertisements like YouTube.

That, on top of the countless "I AM PRODUCAR, LISEN ME TRAK" spam we already get.

Honestly I would do a campaign on soundcloud if they had the same service as bandcamp, because it somehow feels more easy going, not sure why, possible the community aspect gets to me. God damn, I want to start up a legit drum and bass bandcamp page, but attracting people is the key(also need some sick graphic design, dammit). I think bandcamp is lacking that community thing from what I remember.
