MIDI file of Trance Hi hats patterns?

Hello all,

I've been lurking around for a while finally made an account. I've read alot about how to make a hi hat pattern and understand the layering involved, but I still don't understand it. Could some possibly make/export a midi file for me to open up and look at? I am more of a hands on learner.

Thank you!

Basic pattern would be along these lines I guess. Capitals mean the that sound is played at higher volume:

code:
Kick : K---K---K---K---K---K---K---K--- Closed Hat: -hHh-hHh-hHh-hHh-hHh-hHh-hHh-hHh Open Hat : --O---O---O---O---O---O---O---O-

code:
Kick : K---K---K---K---K---K---K---K--- Closed Hat: hhHHhhHHhhHHhhHHhhHHhhHHhhHHhhHH Open Hat : --O---O---O---O---O---O---O---O-

Just do that or something similar and put an extra loop under it and you're done :).

Or some more extended patterns (housier also) :
code:
Kick : K---K---K---K---K---K---K---K--- Closed Hat: -hHH-hHH-hHH-hHH-hHH-hHH-hHH-hHH Tom : ---T-------T-------T-------T---- Tom 2 : ------T-------T-------T-------T-

Or pulling a quick djryan on this one:

Which has this pattern:
code:
Kick : K--kK-k-K--kK-k-K--kK-k-K--kK-k- Closed Hat: hhHHhhHHhhHHhhHHhhHHhhHHhhHHhhHH Open Hat : --o---o---o---o---o---o---o---o- Perc : ---P-------P-------P-------P---- Perc 2 : ------2-------2-------2-------2- Clap : ----C-------C-------C-------C--- Stab : -------S---------------S--------

Conclusion: Just experiment. Especially variating the volume on triggered sounds makes it sound a lot better :).

Sometimes you want a rigid hihat lines to anchor the rhythm, but here are a few tips for giving your hihats more feel:

- use the swing parameter to keep your hats from sounding too rigid.

- look into your DAW's or drum instruments' ability to use groove templates and get familiar with how to use them. Applying the same groove template to hihats and other parts using the same beat division will help them lock together in terms of timing.

- don't be afraid to vary the timing or velocity to give your hats a less static feel; the step sequencer or MIDI editors in some DAWs/drum plugins have a "humanize" feature that can do this for you.

- experiment with hihat fills (or dropouts) to build anticipation, help support or accent a particular part, transitions, etc.

- a little delay on the hihats can add some interest to an otherwise boring hihat line, particularly if the delay has some sort of swing/groove parameter, or a reverse delay, etc. Subtlety is usually the best approach here.

- you can "push" the beat (i.e., play ahead of it) by nudging all of your hats earlier in time by a few milliseconds (ms), or you can "pull" the beat (i.e., play behind it) by nudging them back in time by a few ms. "Pushing" the beat can give the track a little more energy, whereas "pulling" the beat can give it a more laid-back feel. Don't overdo it, though. Some DAWs/drum plugins have a "MIDI offset" feature that will nudge all the MIDI notes in that track forward/backward by the same amount.

- spend some time listening to and watching good drummers (check youtube) and what they are playing. Just because you're working in the virtual realm and making electronic dance music doesn't mean that you can't learn a lot from a RnR drummer.

Good advice guys, the way i first learned how to program percussion hi hats was in reason's drum machine. I would just load up closed hats in the buttons randomly until i get a good pattern going. Then time later I learned how to do it in my arrange window on my Daw (Logic 9) I do it by ear now. When doing this try using a low bpm like 120-125, Its much easier.

GM Hi hats [Hardware Drum modules]Gm has kick and hats at same key on every gm set]
GM=
C1=Kick ,
F#1=Closed hat 1,
A#1=Open hat
GM might use the same sample for open and closed hats like my Roland Mc 505.
So then you can't put a closed hihat on the same timing as the open hat.
Cos they make use of the same basic sample.
So then you do the hats this way and add a shaker to layer it.

Matrix Graphic
- - x - Open hats
x x - x Closed hats

Using Quantise on Logic Audio
= Windows - Matrix Edit
= Select all sounds and go to quantise
[I'm on Logic 5 So for me it's left side in matrix edit below mute vol and other matrix tools [Q] ]

On quantise try experimenting what you like as setting
16B Swing to 16E Swing are most used ,but you can experiment with various settings

The great thing is that you started by selecting all drum sounds.
But you can even add this swing to only 1 note in the drums by selecting only that one note.
Ones you get a bit known with quantise then you'll figure out the trick.

The Trick
If you add a swing go look at the note position in your List Editor.
Then you will see that only 2 notes of the 4 you used get a different position.
The open hihat and the kick will always stay at their place.
Only the 2 sounds in between get moved by swing.

Once you get that ,then you can experiment in list editor.
Thats the most important thing to know if you make hihats.
This swing makes the hats come alive :)

16B puts it at 21
16E puts it at 81

List Numbers
1 1 1 1 = kick position
1 1 2 81
1 1 3 1 = open hi hat
1 1 4 81

Use that swing on Any drum sound in your rhythm.
And you can even use that groove on your bass or melodic notes.

List Numbers [Hyper Speed Drums]
1 1 1 1 = kick position
1 1 2 1 [No Swing]
1 1 2 81 With Swing]
1 1 3 1 = open hi hat
1 1 4 1 [No Swing]
1 1 4 81 [With Swing]

That way you can make the hats roll like done in some hiphop and DnB.
Or if you want to speed up a snare roll , you can do this too.

GM extra info
And if you use hardware GM then you can use it for another purpose
As i explained the hats make use of the same basic sample then
Thus by placing it at 1 or at 81 you change the time to cut the open hihat sound
By putting closed hat at 81 instead of 1 you hear a longer open hihat
So by doing that position change you can change the drive of your open hat
By giving open hat 1 a longer sound than open hat 2 ,like done with Clap sounds in trance

Long Open Hat
1 1 3 1 = open hi hat
1 1 4 81 [With Swing] 80 mini sec longer before cut off

Shorter Open Hat
1 1 3 1 = open hi hat
1 1 4 1 [No Swing]

EnJoY breathing live into your hats and song ,good luck ! ;)

Storyteller you make progress on that track or what? *Slap.

Haha nope. Need to finish thesis this week then need to make it look good next week. Then game on again. Maybe in between a bit too if I find some time.
