Review:
I arrived just as Arty hopped on stage. I was pretty excited to see him as I'm a big fan of nearly every one of his productions. I really enjoyed many of the tracks he played. Haha, but it seemed like he just pressed play on an iPod. He's certainly not the most skilled mixer. Fun set, overall though.
Next up were Bingo Players. Didn't know anything about them. The electro scene isn't something I'd ever listen to on my own, but I was able to feed off their energy and the crowd's. I had a great time dancing and appreciated hearing tracks that I may very well never hear again.
Madeon came on at 8:30. Kid looks extremely young. I heard someone say he's only 17--not sure if that's accurate. Anyways, I thought he played a great set. Really unique sound with a flare for mash-ups. He definitely had the crowd pumped up, myself included.
Then, Eric Prydz, my favourite producer and the man I came to see, took stage. I was desperately hoping he would play well past the scheduled 11pm end time. I'm not sure his style lends itself to a short set.
I was loving the mood Prydz created at the set's beginning. He was completely immersing me in his haunting, deep sound. I feverishly danced and it felt so ing good to hear that Pryda sound live for the first time. Big buildups followed by such intense and exciting drops. However, after the first 20 minutes, Prydz lost me a bit. He just seemed to continue building and building, playing tracks out for 15 minutes. I swear he played his remix of Tenaglia's "Music is the Answer" for a full 15 minutes. The drop was astounding; however, it got tiresome after the 6th or 7th time. The buildup became progressively less interesting as well. Perhaps I was concerned with the duration of his tracks due to the fact that I knew he might only play a 75 minute set. Nonetheless, I danced my heart out.
More tracks and more slow builds filled the rest of the set until Eric put on Allein. Hearing Allein live was amazing. I love that track. Then, he dropped Pjanno--obviously an amazing classic tune that had the crowd and me going crazy. It felt as though Eric was just entering the zone and energy I was hoping for (a la Brixton Academy set, if you've heard it). But then, he turned the sound off and ended the show at 11:00pm.
Overall, I'm glad I went. I had a great time with friends and it was cool to see Eric live. However, I think he missed the mark on his first trip to Canada in four years. The set sounded like the first hour of a potentially amazing three or four hour set. But, as a standalone, I wasn't impressed--it was too slow and building with too little reward. I will say, Prydz is so ing smooth. His transitions are flawless and well-executed. But then again, when you play 6 tracks in 75 minutes, you have lots of time to transition haha.
Young crowd, not a ton of room to dance on the beach. Fun party, but definitely nowhere near as good as Digital Dreams. I'll rank the only set I cared about a 5/10. Prydz seemed too jacked up for what he was playing. I wonder if he was drunk. |

I wasn't paying attention too much to the music as it was sensory overload with all the people and colours and repetitive beats. But it was extremely noticeable when Prydz came on the decks... all of the sudden.... I heard.... yes.. a proper melody! lol
Had my attention from the start, lost me for a bit after as nothing really stood out, but then Music is the Answer! Things totally took off from there and you could see and feel the change in the entire place.
Probably the most epic part of the summer so far for me was the end of Prydz set! :D It was    :eyespop: :eyespop: :eyespop:   :eyespop: :eyespop:  :eyespop:  :eyespop:
Definitely needed at least another hour. |

Definitely noticeable when we got to enjoy a proper melody. None of the other DJs knew a thing about it. |

I saw Nero and he was brilliant. The crowd went nuts and the atmosphere was electric. Excision was also excellent.
There were a few stage generator problems as the Showtek set was interrupted a few times as well as Excision but both acts managed to salvage the situation in good stride without losing the crowd.
Btw, are all of the Toronto EDM crowds like the one I saw at ID Festival? If so, you guys are totally wild, haven't seen such get ups since Electric Zoo last year. |
