Carola! No trends or fads, plays music that has staying power and doesn't change his style.

I disagree with this. I used to be a huge fan years ago. His sound has definitely saturated into genericness imo.

Yes, so many beautiful woman all over the dance floor at Footwork listening to generic nu-disco.

The thing I like most about the new breed of deep house is the resurgence of old school music I grew up with. Hip-hop, R&B hooks, synths that are reminiscent of the dopest from the 80's. Sure, there is a lot of - and copycats out there just trying to capitalize on a trend, but that has happened with every new sound that has blown up.

^^ This. A lot of it is like modern synth-pop.

Also lots of disco re-edits/reloads from the 70s. Songs I never knew existed. Would have LOVED to have been in my adolescent ages during the late 70s - early 80s. :D

Very true. Don't get me wrong, I'm totally a fan of this sound; as long as it's fresh and original. I mean, there are weeks where I'm hearing the same song being played live over, and over, and over again. It just gets tiresome.

I guess that's the same re: any genre of EDM though.

P.S., the people at these events are extremely awesome. I haven't met better friends in other ways tbh. Some of my best friends were made at events I went to just last year, when this sound was resurging.

*edit: I LOOOOOOVE nights ESPECIALLY when there's that dark, proggy feel to the sets, even though I'm dancing to 120-124bpm's...

The most generic of the tech houses.

Firstly, it is starting to annoy me when people call Crosstown Rebels nu-disco. This stuff is more a newer, and slower take on tech-house rather than nu-disco. This isn't to say the Crosstown Rebels sound is bad, but nu-disco is the likes of Todd Terje and The Revenge, not of Seth Troxler, Jamie Jones or Art Department. Jamie Jones used to play a lot of nu-disco, and still does as Hot Natured, but not in his solo sets so much anymore.

I think the state of the current sound, whatever you want to call it, is analogous to the tech-house sound at its apex: there are certain DJs who will just murder a dance floor (given their access to the best and most exclusive tunes), but there is a loooot of crap out there. I think with any sort of popular sound, there is a point of inflection where the scene becomes over-saturated with crap, and then many of the respected producers and DJs jump ship and work on something else because they don't want to be associated with crap.

I am still a huge fan of certain DJs, for example Soul Clap, because they take risks with their DJing, and keep their sets fun and light hearted. They are a unique act within this type of sound, and that's why I think they'll have staying power. However, I haven't really been going out to clubs in this scene very much in the past 6 months - 1 year, but one thing that really annoys me about this type of sound is when you have DJs playing extremely slow and pitched down the entire night. This is fine if you're doing it right, but I find a lot of DJs these days are playing pitched down music just to say that they did, because all of a sudden the slower you can play, the cooler you are. I'm sorry, but I don't go out to hear elevator music at 4am. Don't get me wrong: I'm not saying slow music is bad. In fact, it can be the best kind of music if done right, but playing slow just for the sake of playing slow is pretentious and frustrating for people on the dance floor.

I think this type of sound has one more summer (this one), and then people will be tired of hearing it. I expect a new type of sound to start catching on towards the end of next year. I honestly have no idea what that sound will be because, at least in Toronto, the scene has reached an interested point of fragmentation with "EDM" intriguing most of the new listeners of dance music, and the bass music scene really starting to gain momentum. Neither of these sounds have a home in traditional after-hours venues in Toronto.

As an aside, over the past year, more and more of my music listening time has been devoted to the bass music camp, to the point where it takes about 75% of my listening time. I personally think that it is in this scene where the most interesting things are being done in dance music right now, but that kind of judgement is based a lot on personal preferences.

I feel that more eclectic 4:4 music such as the proggy/techno stuff similar to Klartraum/Midland etc may pick up a bit of steam as well. At least on the techno front I feel these folks are doing some pretty innovative stuff.
